Maybe more over than technically in Davis Square, but probably of interest to at least some of the residents.

Apparently the northern lights may be visible in the Boston area tonight (courtesy of a really huge solar flare which may also mess with phones and gps and anything else satellite based).

This is a pretty rare occurrence.

Does anyone have suggestions for any good places to stargaze/watch for this in the area?

I know even in Anchorage (which got huge light pollution) you could still see the Lights when they'd come out up there. So possibly the Tufts library roof? I don't know where to go locally to get away from local light pollution in general, though.

If you want just a high point, I'd suggest the big hill in Cambridge's Danehy Park, or (as Lori mentioned) the Tisch Library roof at Tufts University. The library roof is an outdoor place, and always open; you don't need to go into or through the library to get to it.

Getting away from city lights is probably much more important than getting to a high point. As long as your view north isn't blocked, you want somewhere where your view north isn't densely settled.

There is a website that tracks the "bursts" along with a map so that you can tell when you should be able to see them.. We probably need a KP number between 7 an 8... Currently it says:

The Space Environment Center's Neural Net Program estimates that . . .

in 13 minutes, the Geomagnetic Activity level (Kp number) will be 6 -- at STORM LEVEL!
in 26 minutes, the Geomagnetic Activity level (Kp number) will be 6 -- at STORM LEVEL!

I have never prayed for a power outage before. But I am right now.
