there's a place in Cambridge called Sew Low. it's FANTASTIC. it's huge and giant and craaaazy, and super cheap. only downside is that it's not organized at all and if you don't have a specific thing already in mind, you'd probably get lost in there for a year.
there's also FabricCorner in Arlington, right off of Mass Ave. it's a really great store, really well organized and the staff there are really friendly. i love going in there and just looking at all the different pretty fabrics they've got.
I just looked up Sew Low...it looks awesome! From what I can tell on the map though, I don't think it's T accessible. What a shame, otherwise I'd be going now!
sew-low fabrics, cambridge street, between fifth and sixth streets.
and, they have new signage, so you can actually notice where it is now.
and there was a fabric store at twin city plaza, which is sort of behind where sew-low is located. no clue if it's still there. there's a shaw's and mcd's also there.
Sew-fisticated Fabrics is still at Twin City Plaza. Stuff is pretty cheap, but I don't do a lot of sewing so can't offer an actually useful review beyond that.
i haven't been there in AGES. when i was going there, it seemed filled w/ indian women buying shiny fabrics. same clientele now? maybe that range of fabric is decent? not that i know. :)
I like that place a lot. Lots of remnants for really good prices. I went there for the fabric for my wedding dress, and was very happy with the price and the fabric. I will admit that the owner/manager is kind of annoying, though.
I say it's a mixed clientele. The range of fabric is decent. The quality of the fabric can be iffy so you have to choice carefully. Personally I refuse to shop there now based on how poorly I've been treated in the past. I'd rather give my hard earned money to nice buisnesses. :)
Winmill is awesome. we usually go to Fabric PLace, but for things like 100% linen or 100% wool -- at lower prices than any other store I have seen - or uoholstery widths of nice thick cotton (for like $5/yard), I go there. Between downtown crossing and the edge of Chinatown.
Haven't been to that one, but the Fabric Place in Randolph is even better than most other FPs (I hear, from those who've been to several of their locations). A bit of a drive, though. Great selection there.

These are the 'burban ones that you'll need a car for. Click the Boston link on that page for the Chinatown stores. They do rock.
