CVS has changed their pricing when items are on sale. I bought one bottle of shampoo on sale 2for$12 and paid the full regular price. Under the new policy, according to the salesperson, if it is two for a price you must buy two to get sale price.

Are they even allowed to do that if they don't explicitly state "Must buy 2" in the sale ad?

I feel like I've seen that advertised as "$7.49, or 2 for $12". If they're not advertising the price for one, that seems misleading. (Edited to clarify: In general, I mean, when there's a discount for buying more than one that doesn't apply if you buy only one; not at CVS in particular.)

Was that sale price just in an ad, or also on the sticker on the shelf?

This week's CVS circular, on page 1, advertises Pantene shampoo as "4.79 each or 2/$8". I see similar pricing for some many other items in this circular.

Ya, I noticed that too, you used to be able to get the sale price on 1 item when the sign says 2 for some amount. I also asked the clerk, he said the same thing, you now have to buy 2.

Is this true for all items or only for certain special ones?

I'm glad to get a warning about this, rather than being caught off guard.

The CVS at South Station now has stickers on the shelves when deals apply - they explicitly say "Must Buy 2." Guessing there's probably an initiative from the top to make it clear that you only get the nice price when you buy in bulk.

CVS’s ads are so deceptive and frustrating that I have stopped shopping there altogether. The signs in the store often say in big print something like “2 for $5,” but in tiny print on a low shelf that you can only read if you get down on your knees, it will say “or 2.99 each.”

Also, sometimes the signs say “Buy 1, get one FREE” but there are never two items on the shelf, so you can only buy 1. When you take it up with a clerk, once in a while they will let you buy one for half price, but more likely they will give you a rain check for another day.

The last time they offered me a rain check, I asked for 6 of the items (which is the limit). They wrote me out a rain check for six, but after looking, over the course of a month, in CVS stores in Davis Square, Porter Square, Magoun Square, and Wellington Circle, I was not able to find even one of the item. I finally went to the Rite Aid in Davis Square where the product was stocked 10 deep, and was only slightly more expensive than CVS’s sale price.

I haven’t been back to CVS since. It is too much work.
