OK, so this is a weird question, but my life would be much improved if I could look up when the periods of lots of airplanes flying over Somerville were going to be. Is there any way to do such a thing?
It probably changes according to wind direction. Maybe if you keep track of the overhead traffic and wind conditions in a spreadsheet you'll start to be able to predict it.
It definitely changes according to wind direction. When the high speed wind is coming from the northwest more planes take off on the route that goes over Somerville.
Commercial planes are required to file flight plans, but they're not required to stick to them; they can change to accommodate weather, flight controllers can put them into whatever paths around the airport are needed to manage traffic in the moment, et cetera. So posting a schedule would be unhelpful. Spending your entire day glued to Flightaware, on the other hand... *g*
Planes departing runway 33L fly over Somerville. That generally happens when there are strong NW winds. You can complain to Massport at the link @tigerbright posted. You might be interested in bostonwestfairskies.org, an organization working to have flights from 33L dispersed over a wider area instead of concentrated over a few.
I'm glad you asked! I do voiceover work as a hobby/side gig, and while I can plan for when neighbors are at their least noisy, I often find that airplane noise interrupts me. I record at home, and there's only so much I can do to soundproof.
you can find out what runway is currently in use for departures by calling 617-455-3003 and listening to the recorded message (it's the automated information that pilots get over their radios). there isn't a schedule per se; the runway in use depends on the wind and other weather conditions.
