Me and my girlfriend own 2 cars one of which has a designated spot and the other we park on the street. Say we are planning a 2 week vacation, wondering what would be my best options to park the extra car. Parking at the airport can quickly add up to $138 for a week. Or we could could just leave it on the sidewalk and eat the $50 fine for street sweeping assuming they are not towing it. What do you folks do?

It's seldom enforced but there is a 48 hour time limit on parking in any one street space in Somerville. This can bite you because once the car picks up a street sweeping ticket, it becomes much more obvious to T&P that it hasn't moved and it can pick up storage tickets as well.

The purpose of this time limit is so that if there's a temporary parking restriction, like construction or moving, the sign only has to be up 48 hours beforehand. Once the 48 hours is up they can tow for storage you even though you never saw the no parking sign. Otherwise they'd have to put up the no parking sign before the previous street sweeping day, which might be a while.

If you absolutely can't find someone to move your car, at least try to park it in a spot where the street sweeping will be at the end of the two weeks instead of the beginning. You risk a tow anywhere if there's a temporary restriction, but you don't want to annoy T&P by leaving a street sweeping ticket on your car for weeks.

I hope you don't really mean that you would park the car on the sidewalk.

What I do: find a friend with temporary space in their driveway. Maybe ask neighbors on Nextdoor? There are also some Airbnb-for-parking apps but I don't know if any cover this area.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago and ended up renting a temporary space from someone on Craigslist. I'd try that or ask a friend to move your car for you.

If you can't find a friend move it around for you, I would do it in exchange for helping me move for an hour this weekend.

If you can't find anything else, I would suggest looking into parking at one of the MBTA garages. That should be cheaper than the airport and I don't think 2 weeks would be a problem, but you should check.
