something Davis Sq probably doesn't need
Dec. 13th, 2005 01:04 amSomeone wants to open a Quizno's sub shop franchise at 401 Highland Avenue, where Disc Diggers used to be. The proposal keeps getting postponed from one Planning Board meeting to the next; it supposedly comes up again at this Thursday night's meeting.
While I can't see a real basis for showing up to oppose it, I also don't see it filling any real need, given that you can already get sandwiches of various kinds at Au Bon Pain, Blue Shirt, Mike's, Diesel, Christo's Seven Star, Subway, O'Natural's, and probably other places I've forgotten about.

Re: ugh... more chains
Date: 2005-12-15 10:44 pm (UTC)I can not fathom why you or anyone would want a Big Mac - but if you want a sub, go to the Italian place on Highland (name....? Souza's? That's the real deal. Support local folk.
Why you would call the Somerville Theater a blight is beyond me. Care to explain?
Chains suck the soul out of a place. Look at Harvard Sq. - it's an outdoor mall.
I used to live in Wicker Park in Chicago. What worked there were gangs. Kept the rents low and the chains out (the Gap that tried to move in was seriously vandalized multiple times before they gave up). Half-jokingly, I wish we had gangs in Davis Sq. (fwiw - the gangs in my neighborhood in Chicago were the Latin Kings and were never into street crime or crimes against persons - so it was surprisinly safe - so long as you weren't in a rival gang). Eventually though Wicker Park did get gentrified and became a weekend tourist destination - just like what is happening in Davis Sq. and the small funky Polish places started getting squeezed out, replaced by corporate sushi bars, and the Mexican botanicas replaced by Oscos.
So what is the true cost of your Big Mac?
