The following is an e-mail I just sent to Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz and cc'd to Denise Provost:

Hi, Rebekah! I used to complain about this to Jack Connolly all the time, now
it's your turn...

The city has not plowed the sidewalk on Day Street next to the municipal parking
lot. This sidewalk is heavily used, and when it is not plowed, people have
to walk in the street.

Since the city requires private property owners to shovel sidewalks, it also
sets a bad example when it leaves its own sidewalks unplowed.

I couldn't believe that they gave people a whole two hours to move their cars today after the snow emergency. That was NOT ON.

As a state legislator, Denise Provost can't really do anything other than argue for increased funding or equipment.

My understanding is that she plans to hold off on resigning as Adlerman-at-Large until she can do so without forcing yet another special election.

(because you just know someone on the School Committee will win, and we'll have to have another election to replace them, etc.)

I got one of those ubiquitous calls from the Somerville Fire Department fundraising folks tonight just as I was walking home from work, and the first thing I said to the guy (before he could ask me for money) was "Hey, can you tell the guys at the Somerville Ave. Fire Station to shovel the sidewalk next to the station on the Lowell Street side?" He did say that he'd "make a note if it", but I'm not holding my breath.

I honestly don't understand the thought process of the DPW, they go insane plowing the streets, but the sidewalks are left completely covered. It's like they want to encourage people to drive their cars on days like today. The Sacramento Street underpass was incredibly dangerous.

they NEVER shovel that part of the firestation. i went in there last year after the 3-foot snow storm and asked them to shovel & they said it was too deep. i laughed at them and said, what do you think the rest of the city is doing and why don't you have a snowblower? they shrugged. i stood at the bottom of their driveway and called the mayor. after leaving a message w/the secretary, i got a call back saying they'd send out the DPW.

hey, i'm glad we have firepeople, but if you had to ask me who are the laziest snow shovellers in the city, i'd say it's them.

I'll give Rebekah a nudge about this the next time my wife and I invite her over for French toast and maple syrup.

That's what we did last Sunday morning.

Namedroppingly yours,
Simon
