Hi everyone. We are new to the area and really like Italian-style pizza. Does anyone have recommendations where we could get some in Davis Square? Having delivery is a bonus.
I'm not sure, but whichever it is will come with heaping portions of indictments, and you'll be forced to call back and demand a recount or else all the other toppings will threaten to form a coalition to replace the one you asked for!
It doesn't have to be greasy. Actually, preferably not. :)
Also I'm not sure how much it has to do with, say, actual Italian pizza....
I think the defining characteristic is the crust, which is bread-like and baked right on (ideally) the bricks of a brick oven. A lot of the pizza in the Boston area is "Greek style", where it's baked in a pan in the pizza oven and which has kind of a chewy crust (with usually not much flavor of its own).
bertucci's says it's baked in a brick oven. and i think their dough tastes fabulous. however, it is chewy. i think they might have a thin crust option, which might be what you are looking for.
there is no bertucci's in davis, but there is in alewife (and harvard...and central).
as one raised in the suburbs of new york, the pizza here is just not that good. as soon as you accept that, you'll be happier :)
We're hoping for something more awesome-local-place and less publicly-traded-chain. Even though Bertucci's _did_ start in Somerville. :)
Anyway, it really seems like the quality at Bertucci's has gone down as they expand. The one in Kenmore Square (near where I work) is basically indistinguishable from an Olive Garden.
Having been to italy and eaten actual italian pizza, i'll say the closest approximation that you'll find in the area is Bertucci's. While it may be a "chain," it's a local chain which does a pretty good job of making me feel like I'm not at a chain restaurant when I'm dining there. That said, I haven't been to every Bertucci's in the area, so I can't account for any variances that may occur between them, but I will say flat out if you're looking for pizza that tastes anything like pizza from Sorrento or Naples, your best bet is Bertucci's. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy. Save me a slice!
I second the people who are saying it's gone downhill. It used to be my favorite pizza place, and now every time I go in there I get something that I eat a few bites of and then am totally done with.

Mike's regular cheese is fantastic but I wouldn't get toppings. They just crack open a can of whatever topping you want and dump it on there. No fresh toppings.
I think your problem is expectations. For what Mike's *is*, it's, okay, well, "great" is the wrong word. But something that equals "great" in a sort of parallel universe.
pizza is a strange thing... good choice is Pini's Pizza on Broadway just north of Winter Hill...but that place in Teele Square is good, thin crust, but greasy... they do deliver...
Angelina's in Teele Square indeed is better than Mike's, Pini's, Pinky's and all the other possessive places. I've heard good reviews from the Tufts crowd about Espresso Pizza but I haven't tried.
If you're willing to head into Cambridge, I have a soft spot for Emma's near Kendall Square.
