Hi everyone. I'm relatively new to the area, and looking for recommendations on takeout/delivery restaurants to try. Anything from Davis to Porter works. I'm getting sick of Anna's and Red Bones, and am looking for something different to eat while I sit around and watch MST3k episodes on my computer tonight. Any kind of food will do. :)

So... Your favorite takeout/delivery place (and why!)... GO!

P.S. Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys! I'm at work, and it would take me too long to thank each of you individually (and my boss would get mad at me). :)

P.P.S. We ended up getting dumplings from Wang's... they were delicious, and I think for next time we will be getting many more than 12 to split between two of us (we also got the chicken and peppers in chili sauce, which was good, and the pork fried rice, which was meh)! Thanks for all of the suggestions, this community is great! I'll definitely be trying them all out in the future!!!

Wang's

You absolutely must order steamed dumplings from Wang's, on Broadway near Magoun Square in Somerville. They make their own, and they have really excellent flavors that you won't find anywhere else.

their scallion pancakes are really good too...and the beef with bamboo and black mushrooms yum yum :)

i'm also partial to Tasty Gourmet for sandwiches (they have the BEST bread)...Urban gourmet for pretty much everything on their menu (you either love or hate their pizza...i personally love it...really crunchy/chewy golden crust). Their grilled veggie salad is also really yummy :)

thai kitchen is decent for cheap, quick thai food

i also really like india palace in union square...really yummy mulligatawny soup and nan :)

Definitely get their home-made dumplings from the back of the menu. Those things are heavenly. But AVOID their pan-fried pork dumplings in the appetizer section - they are awful.

Are their dumplings better than Qingdoa Garden's (probablly spelled wrong) on Mass Ave?

chinese delivery

My favorite is East Asia, in powder house circle. Their Broccoli and Tofu is AMAZING. so are the (steamed) veggie dumplings. portions are good sized, and they have thai as well as chinese.

Seconded, especially if you live nearby (like I do) and can walk.

Fourthed. And when I call for delivery, they always deliver sooner than they promise.

Pinky's Famous Pizza. their Rockin Ricotta in specific is soooo tasty. it has ginormous piles of fresh ricotta on it.

Sugar & Spice has great Thai.

Second Sugar and Spice. They are wonderful. Service is really great there too if you're dining in. They've always been really great to me (I'm something of a regular there).

There are a lot of good restaurants on Dining In as well (diningin.com), including my favorite restaurant in Davis Square - Namaskar.

Also, for quick sandwiches/pizza, I like Davis Square Pizza.

dragon garden for chinese... super-nice people, quick delivery, and they make the best crab rangoons ever.

i'll also second urban gourmet. i love their calzones... yum.

Third on Urban Gourmet. It's our favorite pizza delivery place.

When Urban Gourmet is closed, we order from Di Mio's on Mass Ave.

Fourth on Urban Gourmet. I love designing my own sandwich (turkey, honey mustard, roasted tomatoes, spinach, goat cheese on french bread or a roll-up). And their roasted veggie sides are simple and delicious (asparagus!).

All the little places in Porter Exchange. And just past Porter, on Beacon, is Zoe's (they deliver) and Tacos Lupita (they don't).

oh seconding Tacos Lupita big time...

everything they make is so freakin good...they put Anna's burritos to shame :)

SHAME i tell you :)

If only they were as cheap!

I'll put in my votes for Pinky's Famous Pizza, Urban Gourmet and Wang's. How can you possibly be tired of RedBones? I eat there at least once per week!

I highly doubt pulled pork sandwiches are any worse than the pizza and chinese food most are recommending.

I could totally argue this with you as Southern born and bred. =) But I won't.

Agreed.

As someone from The South, I can say that Redbones is acceptable, but definitely not *great*.

Agreed again. Their fried okra makes me sad.

Hmmm..appropriate MST3K munchies...

You could try Theo's pizza. It's not bad, decent prices and they deliver late.

Or if you want spicy/buffalo I would go to Soundbites BBQ (formerly Zing Wings) over on Broadway.

After you get some Wang's, get some Zoe's. Scallion pancakes, frozen tofu with mushrooms, tripe with cilantro, ma po tofu, green vegetable.

From: [identity profile] yangelina.livejournal.com
whoa! where is Zoe's? I've never heard of them. Tripe with cilantro must be amazing (I'm surprised they have it!), and ma po tofu is one of my favorite dishes and so many places make it wrong.

It's on Beacon Street just outside of Porter. The menu is online here (http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~lipoff/miscellaneous/menus/).

They've got a pretty large menu, and while not everything is worth ordering twice, it's all made in a really honest, delicious style.

From: [identity profile] yangelina.livejournal.com
Got some food from Zoe's last night. Thanks for that link/menu! The food was great, and I have some for lunch today. Plus they were *super* fast with delivery, from ordering to getting the food, we waited under 20 minutes. I'm looking forward to going there on a weekend for their weekend dishes. Have you tried those yet?

Date: 2006-04-23 01:23 am (UTC)

Nope, I haven't had their dim sum items.

i loooove Rose's chinese restaurant on Boston Ave in Medford. if you go to www.campusfoods.com, you can order from them online, and they're wicked quick with delivering it. their sesame chicken is fantastic & deliciously spicy, while their sweet & sour chicken is the best i've ever had. really, you must try their sweet & sour chicken. holy crap.

yoshi's has good sushi (college ave, right in powderhouse circle).

good luck!

no, but really, you need to try Rose's.

Date: 2006-04-20 05:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thauhen24.livejournal.com
I second Rose's, but just make sure you instruct them to leave out the MSG when you order. Their food is good anyway, but when they omit the MSG it's fantastic.

Oh, and Yoshi's also has pretty decent sushi; not great, mind you, but definately good.

lots of great recommendations already.

i also throw in martsa on elm in davis for a tibetan-indian mix, and mama lisa's on broadway in winter hill for pizza.

Urban Gourmet in Ball Square makes excellent pizza, as well as entrees. Their tomato sauce is particularly rich, like it was made with roasted tomatoes. Mmmm.

Oh, also, Dave's Fresh Pasta for GREAT sandwiches that you can design yourself.

I adore Dave's. Now only if their expansion didn't push out Mr. Crepe... :(
But I still adore Dave's. :)

Sound Bites BBQ - formerly Zing Wings - on Broadway in Ball Square is pretty good & has a wide variety of selections - from Roast Beef Sandwiches to Middle Eastern Platters. They are across the street from Sound Bites & owned by the same guy. Another vote for Urban.
