Does anyone have a recommendation for a good (inexpensive) optometrist in the area? I need a contact lens exam which runs about $120 at LensCrafters. If I could find a place that's cheaper, and less mercenary about their appointments, I'd be very happy.

Try a For Eyes location, maybe? They're forever having specials and sales. http://www.foreyes.com/cl/index.html

I went to the Optical Center at Sears in the Cambridgeside Galleria and the doctor that I had there was really nice. They also run specials on occassion.

Well, I can recommend a good optometrist, but I'm not sure about inexpensive. The one at the Pearl vision place near the Shaws on McGrath highway is very good. I have insurance and terrible eyesight, so I'm much more concerned with the quality of the doctor than the price tag.

Really? I must have gotten the really sucky horrible one. My poor eyeballs were traumatized for some time after being forced to wear contacts that absolutely did not fit and kept popping out whenever a little breeze came by. (Although maybe they fired that guy and got a better one by now.)

Fortunately, I got a good recommendation for someone over in Newton Centre.

*LOL* I read this as your eyeballs kept popping out... which would make me pretty cranky too!

Hahahaha! While I was wearing the Hell Contacts, I often wished my eyeballs *would* pop out.

You can do nothing wrong with Parelli Optical, in Porter Square.

they've been good to me, too, though I wear glasses rather than contacts.

Apparently they have coupons (http://www.eyecare-experts.com/coupons.htm), too.

Hmm...and I need contacts...

They also give you a credit on anything equivalent to an average of what insurance would have gotten you. I thought that was swell.

IQ in Harvard Square is good. And you get that warm fuzzy independent biz. feeling.

I went to IQ for contacts a couple of years back, and this girl kept pushing glasses on me. I said many times that, no, I don't need glasses, and she kept at it, brought them out on the counter, holding them by my face and saying, "this will look nice," etc. Then they fitted me for lenses that bugged me the whole next year (even when I said to the doctor which specific brand I used to wear and that I really enjoyed them), and the prices seemed rather expensive. They also wrote down my prescription wrong (the two receipts they gave me didn't match) and when I brought that to their attention, they 'fixed' it, but it was STILL wrong. And instead of getting the doctor to sign off on the change on the prescription, one of the assistants (clerks?) just said, "don't worry about it. It's fine."
I didn't go back to them, as much as I liked the fuzzy independent biz feeling.

Dr. Sylvia Scott on Mass Ave.

I'm not sure if it will be less expensive, since I had some insurance coverage when I went last year. He was very professional and efficient, as was his staff. The appointment was easy to make and he was right one time. Also, I believe he has some pricing information on the website.

Good luck!
