Hi everyone! I'm looking for somewhere to go and shoot hoops for fun in the Somerville/Medford area. I'm talking just an outdoor court where I can go play (or I guess indoor would be ok too if it didn't cost me an arm and a leg). Now, I'd prefer somewhere lowkey where I can just shoot around and maybe play some 1 on 1 with friends :) Meaning, I don't want to engage in any ultra competetive pick up games...well not just yet, I'm just looking to have some fun and get some exercise :)

Also, I'd be interested in playing in a laid back league if you know of one...either co-ed or all females would be fine :)

Any ideas? :)

Thank you!

it's in medford, but right on the somerville line... there is that park on mystic valley parkway (right by the intersection of that & broadway, but further down MVP, at the 3-way rotary by powderhouse rd .. i think that's the rd, anyway) that has soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and bball hoops. i always see kids playing there, and there's always a court empty.

in terms of a leauge, i would check out boston ski & sports club. they have all different leagues (Even dodgeball! and kickball!) that are co-ed (At least 2 girls on a team, for the most part). you can google them, but i think their website is www.bssc.com.

There's an outdoor mini-park on Lexington Ave, off Willow, where there are hoops. I used to live in the house next to it and they thwack-thwack-thwack of the basketballs drove me insane! (but I don't live there anymore, so have fun!).

However, it has two half-courts instead of one full-court. People in the neighborhood are trying to get the city to fix this, since the current configuration is not very useful.

But by having them half size, there can be no games -which keeps noise and crowds down. Not everyone who uses the playground wants gangs of ball bouncers hanging around.

other courts

The Lexington courts are nice, but as mentioned are two "half" courts. Other drawbacks include tons of little kids running and learning to ride bikes there too. I also get a bit self-conscious with all the dogs and dog walkers that hang out on the bike path around there.

Another set of courts is near the Somerville Public Works (Broadway and Cedar - actually Franey Road I believe). The courts and softball fields can be busy at times depending on when you go.

on broadway past holland street there is a school that has basketball courts. my fiance goes with his kids on weekends there and in the evenings. they never have a problem being bothered by pushy people wanting the courts :)

I'm so not a basketball player but:

Kennedy school has courts, I think. And I think there's courts at the park at the corner of Craigie and Summer street? Also, there's a court in Davis Square, and there's court at the park on top of Prospect Hill.

Are the ones at Craigie and Summer the ones with the crazy multicolor paint job? They look pretty nice!

Would the court on Highland Ave across from Brooks Pharmacy work?
Not a basketball player myself, so I've never really looked to see if it's a full court or not. Also, summer afternoons there are almost always some dudes out there playing some fairly serious looking games.

the back of the powderhouse school (between teele square and the traffic building) has several courts...lexington park, kenney park (on grove street), trum field, the healey school, all have basketball courts...with trum being the most popular.

morse-kelly playground on cragie street also has courts, and i'm sure there's a ton of other parks that i am forgetting about having courts...but the park that i have *never* seen anyone playing ball at in the evening is the one off governor winthrop ave (ten hills, accessible between route 28 and temple street, roughly across from the christmas tree shops if you need a third reference point)...grimmons park. i haven't walked back into the park, but i think there's at least one full court back there.
