And I'm a girl. Let me explain - I have a hairdresser who I have been seeing for the past two years. We've had a few moments of miscommunication where I wound up with a decent, yet not-quite-what-I-wanted hairstyle. However, my latest hair cut was the last straw. I wound up looking like a cross between Hayley Mills in the Parent Trap and Mike Myers as Austin Powers. I thought to myself, "Okay, self! This isn't a great haircut, but it will probably grow out into something that looks okay." But no, now I just look like Michael Landon's less fortunate twin sister.

My question - Does anyone know of a hairstylist that gives a decent cut and who can generally follow directions for less than $30? Part of my problem is that I was seeing someone rather expensive ($60 a cut), therefore couldn't get my hair trimmed all that often, and I have short hair. So I would attempt to get a haircut that would "last". This means that I usually wound up with a style that I liked in the beginning, but that would later grow out into a mullet, or hated at first, but would then grow into something I liked. I could solve this problem by getting a decent hairdresser who I could afford to see more often.

I would love to see someone in Davis Square, but I'll take recommendations for stylists anywhere in Cambridge or Somerville.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I go to Zen at Mario's Salon in Davis Square. They charge $30 for a wash, cut, and blowdry, and you can save $5 by skipping the blowdry. I asked her for a haircut like this one (http://www.oprah.com/tows/slide/200605/20060517/slide_20060517_350_113.jhtml) (the one on Sarah, not Oprah!) and here's the result (http://pics.livejournal.com/anotherjen/pic/00001ddt/), with the exception that I chose to add bangs.

BTW, those curls on me are natural.

Second vote for Mario's. They always do what I ask and it grows out nicely.

Third. Mario himself did me and I was very happy with the result.

I have only had great cuts from the ladies at Salon Femia, which is now on Holland. I"ve had cuts from a few of the different girls there, and all did exactly what I asked them to do.

Cuts are $30.

I have longer hair (shoulder length), but the only cut I ever got at Salon Femia was awful. They not only dramatically changed the cut when I asked for "the same but shorter", they also paid no attention to how long I asked for AND burnt my ears with the blowdryer. Never again.

That's pretty crazy - I've definitely never had an experience like that. I went in with really long hair (down to my butt) and had them do layers starting from mid back up to my shoulders. A very complex/lengthy cut by most standards to get the layers right. I've never had anyone do that cut better.

I've since been back and have my hair now at its shortest in years (chin -> just past shoulders) and they've done great. My roommate with much shorter hair has had good experiences with them as well.

Did you complain to the owner? I would think she'd be pretty pissed that one of the girls did that.

Salon Femia is now just across the T station, on the same sidewalk as Johnny D's. I have been getting a cut every 2-3 months with Danielle. Of all the sisters, I think she is the best stylist and makeup artist in Somerville. A cut just went up $5.

On Tuesday, I got color and cut for $75. My first color, and I am very happy with it. Just make sure you ask for an appointment with Danielle. Her sisters are very nice and chatty, but their cuts can look conventional and dull. They don't give me the "oh my gawd, I look beautiful feeling." Plus, Danielle is very good at following instructions, reading one's insecurities and explaining technically why something might work or not.

Good luck!

Dellaria is at the Galleria (also Downtown Crossing and Brookline and Comm Ave), not in Davis, but they have often been voted "best short haircut in Boston" for women and with reason. Their prices are good (I think $35 and under for short) and I took my thick, unruly, difficult hair to them for several years when it was really short. If you just want to see someone random and have it probably turn out well, go there. They are excellent.

Having said that, I keep hearing good things about Mario's on Broadway.

I see Keri at Amal Nicoli on Broadway. I think it's $35 plus tip. I have very short hair with lots of cowlicks and she does a fantastic job!

I have gone here as well and liked the job they did.

I have to put in a good word for Pyara in Harvard Square. I treated myself to a [$35] haircut there a few months ago, and was most pleased with the result. The atmosphere was lovely, the person I saw (Jessica, I believe) was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful, and I ended up with a great haircut. Their prices start at $35 and go up based on experience.

I used to go to Mario's. Nowadays, I swear by Salon CU. You can see their prices on saloncu.com.

Note that "Men's" on their pricelist appears to refer not to gender but style as evidenced here (http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/530767.html?thread=3735631#t3735631). And let it be noticed that [livejournal.com profile] yagagriswold's haircut was adorable.

I feel like I should post that I had a BAD experience at Mario's. I saw Anna, and while my hair looked fine, it was terrifying and somewhat violent. I ended up with burnt-feeling ears and getting whacked/scratched several times from a brush.

I got a really excellent dye job at Mario's (see icon), but the cut was not what I wanted, and it was not a great experience because the stylist and I could not seem to communicate. I don't usually have trouble with someone just because they have a thick accent, but I had trouble this time. I would not say it was a bad experience (and I have had some BAD experiences elsewhere!), but it was not the magical time that others have had.

I've also been to Mario's for other things (waxing) and had mixed experiences, sometimes really good, sometimes just okay.

I think that they probably have a lot of excellent stylists and only a few that are not as good, so your experience depends on who you get. I bet you anything that if you go with a specific name somebody mentions here, you'll have an excellent experience. Wish I'd done that!

Oh, and I went to Salon Femia today for something and had a really good experience. I think I may try them for a haircut next.

Anna at Mario's! I hardly had to tell her what I wanted, she knew exactly! I think that's a good sign, and I know she takes direction well too from what I've asked her to do before.

I had a short cut two years ago and pretty much exclusively went to Umberto at Mario's. He just opened up Salon Cu in Ball Square and I was in there the other day (went short again, yay!). Summer was the girl that cut my hair and she did a great job, but had I known it was Umberto's salon I would have tried to get him. My wash, cut, and blow dry was $35.

I heart Josh at Judy Jetson on Mass Ave. His current rate is $45. He's always given me super haircuts.
