So, my car has to go in to the shop for some major work. I'm taking it to a mechanic I trust down by my folks. Unfortunately, this means I need to swap cars with my dad for 3 weeks or so. Obviously, his car isn't going to have my resident parking sticker. I thought at first that I'd just slap my visitor's permit on it, but I've heard you can only use that for 2 or 3 consecutive days or something like that, and I need to do it for 3 weeks.

Way Back When, I used to have a car of my own with out of state plates, so couldn't get a sticker. I used to park down on Park Ave between Beacon and Somerville, where the parking doesn't require a resident's permit. However, that was when I used to live between Porter and Harvard, and Park was relatively convenient.

So, I'm looking for suggestions. Does anybody know (safe) streets near Davis that don't require resident's permits? I'm between College & Willow near Morrison Ave., so ideally I'd be looking for something on that side of the square, closer to me than Park (which is, well, far).

Any and all tips/hints/suggestions are appreciated!

call the parking office? surely this has come up before. if they can't/won't help, i'd call city hall and the aldermen :)

I beleive the part of Willow closest to Davis doesn't! I used to leave my car there for whole weekends.

Willow, north of Morrison (towards Broadway), is no permit required.

I second call the parking office. I've frequently heard reports of them being very accomodating for special situations.

Josephine (just on the other side of Willow) is also currently non-permit parking, though occasionally people try to change that.

Thirding the suggestion to call the parking office, with the caveat of personal experience- I've had them extend the time a friend could my vistor's permit to a week, and it only took one really easy call to get that done (of course, they don't seem to have a way of alerting the officer who goes around ticketing, and I collected a week's worth of tickets that I had to mail in and have nullified, but it all worked out in the end).

If you call the parking office, they will most likely have you come in. You used to be able to call, but now they just started a new program for non-resident cars to park in resident places.

I had a rental car for 2 weeks for work, and they charged me $10 to get a month-long pass to park on the street in front of my house. I just had to bring the rental car agreement; I am not sure what proof they will make you bring for your dad's car.

One of my friends had her brother's car for a while, and she got a parking pass from the office. You should probably call and find out what information they need to give you a month pass.

yea i called them yesterday b/c a friend is staying with me for a week. they used to do extentions on the visitor permits, but they now issue temporary permits for $20. which sounds worth it for 3 weeks, didn't seem worth it to me for 1 week.

but let me know if they give you different info.

p.s. it would be great if there was some resource that listed which streets were permit and which not. i never found one, but maybe someone else knows of one?

A couple years ago, I was told this by the parking office: Just call ahead and tell them that you'll have a rental car in place of your normal car; if you get a ticket on the rental, the parking office will waive it, since you registered with them beforehand.

I found this out because I had a rental while mine was in the shop and I just parked on my street like I normally did, totally forgetting that it wasn't my normal car. So I got a ticket. They waived the ticket, but warned me that next time I should call them in advance. (That it's no problem waiving the ticket if they have your advance notice on file.)

But call the parking office and ask them what the current policy is. (I'm surprised you didn't call them first, instead of posting here...)

Also please be considerate of those people who live on those streets that need parking before you park on another's street.
