Someday Café will CLOSE by August 15

I just came back from Someday, and confirmed the bad news. The café has not renewed its lease with the landlord (Chatham Light Realty), and the café's owner (Gus Rancatore, of Toscanini's ice cream) is disinclined to reopen it elsewhere in Davis Square. Unless someone changes his mind, the café must vacate by August 15, and most likely will close around August 1.

[EDIT (6/27, 12:10 am): after exchanging e-mail and a phone call with Ian Judge, the manager of the Somerville Theatre, I have edited this post so that it no longer says that "the landlord is making them leave". Ian's statement is here. I'm going to leave the phone number and e-mail address in place; they came from a sign at the Someday's counter last night.]

I just talked to Ian Judge, manager of the Somerville Theatre. He asked me to pass on the following statement:

"The fact is that the Someday chose not to renew their lease and so another tenant was found, and an effort was made to find a local independent business, which we did. A lease has already been signed with Mr. Crepe, so there is no chance of a change in this situation.

Chatham and Richard are not 'making' them leave. The Someday had three months to renew their lease and they failed to do so. It is not an eviction."

You may want to update your original post if you've collected new info that contradicts (or significantly refines) what you heard at first...

You could edit the entry with an addendum, otherwise people are likely to call, anyway, and exisitng comments will still make sense.

This strikes me as entirely plausible given my comment above. The Someday's been a financially losing situation almost since the day Tosci's bought it. It doesn't make sense for them to keep it open when it finishes in the red year after year. Sad for all of us but it's a business not a charity.

I don't think the present owner knows how to run it like the older owners from Oregon did. The atmosphere changed, the paint got ugly and the druggy types moved in.

I actually expected Gus to eventually, gradually turn it into an ordinary Toscanini's. That would have caused some outcry from those of us who liked the Someday as it was, but it might have been a better business decision.

Hey, Mr. Crepe used to be down near Dave's Fresh Pasta on Holland St. I loved Mr. Crepe! I'll miss the Someday, but it'd be cool to have Mr. Crepe back.
