I just came back from Someday, and confirmed the bad news. The café has not renewed its lease with the landlord (Chatham Light Realty), and the café's owner (Gus Rancatore, of Toscanini's ice cream) is disinclined to reopen it elsewhere in Davis Square. Unless someone changes his mind, the café must vacate by August 15, and most likely will close around August 1.

If you don't want this to happen, call Richard at Chatham Light, 617-354-4466 , and e-mail gus@tosci.com .

(for earlier discussion, see the post immediately below this one.)

[EDIT (6/27, 12:10 am): after exchanging e-mail and a phone call with Ian Judge, the manager of the Somerville Theatre, I have edited this post so that it no longer says that "the landlord is making them leave". Ian's statement is here. I'm going to leave the phone number and e-mail address in place; they came from a sign at the Someday's counter last night.]

Yup. I agree. I love having the Someday in the Sq. It added to the Davis vibe and will be sorely missed. (I did notice over the years that it was getting a bit run down with lot of vagrants hanging around.)
Mr Crepe is awesome however. Let's hope it's as cool as it was before.
If only The Someday or another independent coffee store would open and replace some of those bizarre old stores on Highland.

The vagrants, you know. I think they're the same people who'd be loudly hailing cabs at 4am if the DnD went 24-hours.

no. they are the ones who sleep on the subway benches during the morning commute and stand around in a stupor arguing with each other about where the smookes have gone

Logical fallacy aside, can you at least TRY not to be entitled and ignorant?

Wow, I thought the jab at the ever-charming cleanup_davissq was obvious enough for even you to get. Next time I'll be sure to flag all sarcasm with big capital letters.

I didn't know their status at the time (still don't), but there were three or four down on their luck guys in the back the last time I went into Someday to get some work done. (That's not priviledge speaking, that was listening to their conversations which catalogued a pretty wide variety of familial, financial, and legal dysfunction.) One was clearly on something and spoiling for a fight; the rest were putting up with him while making frequent trips to the bathroom and taking hits off a pint bottle of vodka. They had a couple of cups of McDonald's coffee but nothing from Someday, so I'm guessing they'd figured it was a good place to hang out on a rainy afternoon. I haven't seen them since but I haven't been there during the day recently.

Regardless, I doubt they have much to do with the place closing. I'm going to miss it terribly.
