Someday Café will CLOSE by August 15

I just came back from Someday, and confirmed the bad news. The café has not renewed its lease with the landlord (Chatham Light Realty), and the café's owner (Gus Rancatore, of Toscanini's ice cream) is disinclined to reopen it elsewhere in Davis Square. Unless someone changes his mind, the café must vacate by August 15, and most likely will close around August 1.

[EDIT (6/27, 12:10 am): after exchanging e-mail and a phone call with Ian Judge, the manager of the Somerville Theatre, I have edited this post so that it no longer says that "the landlord is making them leave". Ian's statement is here. I'm going to leave the phone number and e-mail address in place; they came from a sign at the Someday's counter last night.]

Holy crap, that is funny. I don't really see why the employees would know your sexual preferences unless it was stated, or someone was being lewd (staring at boobies, for example). I'm curious as to how the employees would know what your sexual preference was...or if the employee was just being a typical counter-jockey and wasn't all that friendly, and that somehow got interpreted as "anti-straight".

First, let's get something straight, if you will. This isn't anything I experienced personally. I have an entirely different axe to grind. But in casual conversations with others at party and the sort, I've heard a few straight women bitch about how they were basically ignored by Diesel's staff but if there was an obvious lesbian behind them, the counter girls would be more friendly to them.

If I only heard this once or twice, I would dismiss it, but I've probably heard this a good 8-10 times from different people.

Wow. I'm sure that they did say that to you, and probably felt that was the case..but that is still pretty funny to me.

I've been there god only knows how many times with gay and straight friends and never experienced anything like that. Perhaps it did happen to them but its certianly not something I've ever witnessed.

I'm going to laugh over straight-discrimination/non-preferential treatment all day though. Thanks for the laugh!

Ah, but just because you might see a bear in the woods and it's not shitting doesn't mean that bears don't shit in the woods. ;)
