All this talk about the music being too loud at Someday reminds me of the funniest/oddest thing a cashier ever said to me when I asked him to please turn the music down a little.

He said:

"No. I'm not going to turn it down. Customers have the mistaken impression that the music is on for their entertainment. It's not. It's on for our benefit to keep us going when we're dog-tired. We need it this loud. You can leave, we can't."

The best part about that? The guy who said it to me, who essentially said "if you don't like the music get out," was the cashier at Mr. Crepe a couple years back.

I love Mr. Crepe. I really hope they move into the old CD Spins space, or maybe a sub-divided part of the Buck-a-Book space, or the Citizen's Bank space... but don't look to them to be a panacea for your music-volume woes.

You know, as someone who works in a servie profession, I have remarkably limited sympathy.

I mean, hell, I have multi-hour stretches where I don't get to go to the bathroom, and I'm pregnant, and it's still my job to smile and be charismatic, and I do. Harrumph.

Funny you should mention the loud music at MR. Crepe. I went there 3 times while they where open. I always liked the crepes but it always took forever to get my order! The last time I went it took between 30 - 40 minutes for my single crepe and the entire time they where playing the most obnoxious ( in the ear of the beholder ) music VERY loud. I was determined to never go back no matter how good the food was. I then read in the paper ( Somerville Journal ) a while after my last visit that the two owners where in some big legal dispute over ownership of the business and where locking each other out.

The one time I went to Mr. Crepe the food was very good, but I too waited much too long and did not return after that. Supposedly the new Mr. Crepe will have more pans and therefore shorter waits.

I must be the only person in Davis who never went to Mr. Crepe nor ever even heard the name until it closed. (I don't get up Holland-way much now that I live in Ball Sq.). When the resurrected Mr. Crepe opens, it will be my very first visit there.

You're not quite the only person - and I'm pretty sure I'd been up to Dave's Fresh Pasta before Mr. Crepe went away.

This is really funny. One example does not a trend make. That guy was definitely being an ass.

y'know

Listen' to yourselves, people -- it's like sittin' around the old folks home in rocking chairs talking about kids today. Fine, so they like to play loud music at Someday. Sometimes I enjoy that, and often it's really good music. If I don't feel in the mood for it at a particular time, I can indeed always go somewhere else. That may not be the recipe for a successful national chain, but, well....

The thing is that it totally sucks that the Someday is going away, but it would be even more sucky if it weren't be going away because some people couldn't do something as simple as turn down the music. Now it may be that the Someday just wouldn't be the Someday anymore if they didn't play the music loud, and if that's the case, then I guess we only have to mourn it. But from where I sit, it seems like such a simple thing that might make a difference to a lot of people. People like me who appreciate what it was and what it could be, the purpose it served in people's lives, but couldn't ever go there and enjoy myself.

I mean, the Someday doesn't exist solely to serve my whims, but it always seemed like such a small thing to do.

I think the truth, though, is that the reason the Someday died is that the Theater owner was a jerk. It is a terrible loss for the Square.
