if you don't like the music get out (a true story)

All this talk about the music being too loud at Someday reminds me of the funniest/oddest thing a cashier ever said to me when I asked him to please turn the music down a little.

He said:

"No. I'm not going to turn it down. Customers have the mistaken impression that the music is on for their entertainment. It's not. It's on for our benefit to keep us going when we're dog-tired. We need it this loud. You can leave, we can't."

The best part about that? The guy who said it to me, who essentially said "if you don't like the music get out," was the cashier at Mr. Crepe a couple years back.

I love Mr. Crepe. I really hope they move into the old CD Spins space, or maybe a sub-divided part of the Buck-a-Book space, or the Citizen's Bank space... but don't look to them to be a panacea for your music-volume woes.

Listen' to yourselves, people -- it's like sittin' around the old folks home in rocking chairs talking about kids today. Fine, so they like to play loud music at Someday. Sometimes I enjoy that, and often it's really good music. If I don't feel in the mood for it at a particular time, I can indeed always go somewhere else. That may not be the recipe for a successful national chain, but, well....

The thing is that it totally sucks that the Someday is going away, but it would be even more sucky if it weren't be going away because some people couldn't do something as simple as turn down the music. Now it may be that the Someday just wouldn't be the Someday anymore if they didn't play the music loud, and if that's the case, then I guess we only have to mourn it. But from where I sit, it seems like such a simple thing that might make a difference to a lot of people. People like me who appreciate what it was and what it could be, the purpose it served in people's lives, but couldn't ever go there and enjoy myself.

I mean, the Someday doesn't exist solely to serve my whims, but it always seemed like such a small thing to do.

I think the truth, though, is that the reason the Someday died is that the Theater owner was a jerk. It is a terrible loss for the Square.
