Does anyone have recommendations for local renters' insurance providers? I don't have a car, so I don't have an existing insurance agent to go through. Helpful hints or info on rates/good agents/etc. would be awesome.

(If it matters, I'm renting a first-floor apartment between Davis and Ball Squares.)

Thank you so much!

I've used Amica for over a decade for my car insurance, and they are also known for home (and renters) insurance. I'm waiting until I'm in a place I care about before buying it. Look at www.amica.com

one caveat...

I had been unable to obtain renter's insurance through most companies because I have 'roommates'... I think Amica was the only company who would actually sell me any insurance and they jacked up the rates because we had unmarried, unrelated people cohabitating :) Good luck, and let me know what you do find out! (this was about 3 years ago that I was insurance shopping & had issues)

I have renter's insurance from Traveler's ... the agent is Brownstone Insurance (www.brownstoneinsurance.com). I haven't had to file a claim yet, so I'm not really sure if they're good or not.

I have roommates and it doesn't seem to matter. As I understand it, it would cover my stuff but not theirs. Roughly speaking, I think it's about 150 a year for 20k in coverage (forget if it's replacement value or not), and then 100k in liability is added on. If you have high value items like jewelry, fine art, etc... they typically require you to add-on specifically for those.

Try Wedgewood Crane and Connelly

My fiancee and I are in the midst of purchasing renters insurance right now. It's been kind of a hassle because of our unmarried status. So far, the most helpful person has been Jack @ Wedgewood Crane and Connolly on College Ave. Unlike USAA, my car insurance company, they're not forcing us to combine car insurances to get renters insurance. Odds are really good that we'll be going with WCC this week.

I've had insurance with Wedgewood, Crane & Connelly (the actual product is through Arbella) for four years. I've never had need to put in a claim, but their regular service (moving, roommates) etc. has been remarkable. As a result, I'm in the process of changing my car insurance to them from Liberty Mutual.

We have it from Liberty Mutual, our agents name is Mary Beth Cafferty. She is very nice and helpful. She explains everything to you and we got a good rate. We had no problems having both our names on it, even though we are not married, either. Roommates were not an issue, as we have 2 of those as well.

Wiseman on Highland

I went to Wiseman Insurance on Highland because it was close and they were nice. They have always been helpful (have my auto insurance through them too). The insurance was through Traveler's and it was cheap but I also have never had a claim so I don't know what that side of things is like.

This year I let it lapse because.... I was feeling thrifty (false sense of thrift perhaps).
