fireworks?

Around 1:30 this morning I was woken by the sound of fireworks being shot off. They were being launched high into the air several blocks west of Davis Square, and I could clearly see them from my third-floor west-facing window on Day Street. Any idea what this was all about?

Part of a Tufts orientation event? I know that they launched off a bunch for their class day.

Not to mention the wrong time of day. I'm pretty new to Somerville, but I can't imagine the city giving *anyone* a permit to shoot fireworks at 1:30 am.

We didn't do it! _{Actually I didn't attend the party and was partying elsewhere outside of Somerville, so maybe we did...}

Wasn't from that direction. I live at Day and Orchard, and my window faces directly 'west', toward Dover Street. The fireworks were being launched from somewhere behind there.

Did anyone else here see or hear it?

I'm on Lester Terrace, and heard them clearly, and saw them reflected in the windows across the street, which I think puts them vaguely southish of Lester, but I never saw them straight on.

Thanks for confirming. For a while, I was starting to wonder if I had had a really strange dream, one that included my picking up the phone and calling 911.

(belatedly) Yes, I heard them too, from a couple of blocks away from you. I remember thinking "wtf? could that be gunshots? .... no, that's not gunshots. Weird."

Strange, I heard a banging sound that sounded like explosions of some kind all the way over at Beacon Hill at the same time. I couldn't tell where it came from, I just heard it through my window.

I just called the Somerville police (non-emergency number) to ask what, if anything, they knew about this. They told me they received 4 or 5 other noise complaint calls around the same time as mine, and that the cause was 'fireworks coming from Cambridge'. They said Cambridge police stopped several people on Dover Street, but then sent them on their way.

I assumed it was part of the party going on right outside my window (on Orchard, between Dover and Meacham).
