Parking Districts?

A guest of mine got a ticket marked "out of area" for parking half a block from my house. So, I'm writing to contest the ticket, and one thing I note is that I can't find documentation anywhere about what area a guest permit marked "district C" actually covers. My google fu has failed me. Any suggestions?

district C? as far as i know, somerville goes entirely by voting wards...there should be a map somewhere of the wards on the city's website.

If you look at a guest parking permit, it has a big letter - in this case "C", labeled as "Visitor District". I don't know whether they correspond to wards at all, or something else.

From what I remember from the guy that actually does all the parking business in Somerville ...

The Actual Car Stickers are good for citywide parking.

The Guest Passes have to be on the road that you live on, and adjacent streets, but no where out of that ...

I am unaware of the district situation and have people park quite aways from where I live (the street I am adjacent to is constantly packed) ... so you might live dangerously close to one of those lines.

I'd contest it at least. No harm in it other than the loss of time.

you should email the parking people and protest even though you're not sure of the rules. sometimes the parking people just do weird things. like last year i received a ticket for not having a parking permit even though it was clearly marked...so i wrote them an email and explained this & they dismissed the ticket, no problem.

I think this was said already, but the permit says it allows you to be on your street or a cross street. You can't park on a street off a cross street (even if it's 20 feet away). Where was the guest parked relative to your street.

The guest was on the adjacent street, so it should have still been good. I'll add that to my letter, though. :)

They don't specifically say at the parking office (that way they can ticket at will) but I was told to stay within one block to be safe.

What you can also do, during overnights, is let them park in your space and find on-street parking with your sticker, which could work better.

One thing I've learned about Somerville in the year+ that I've lived here is that they EXIST to give you tickets. I've gotten about half a dozen tickets for parking outside my old apartment, and one of the tickets was for me being allegedly parked in a place I never was. That one I got taken off, but they wouldn't take off any of the other ones.

Is it a Somerville or Cambridge ticket? Because I too have "C" Visitor passes, and I live right on the edge of the city line, and I've often wondered what would happen if my friends parked a little further down the street.

It's a Somerville ticket. I wouldn't assume that a Somerville guest permit would let you park in Cambridge even if it's nearby, unless Cambridge is much nicer about parking than Somerville is. :)

(Though when we were house-hunting and looked at a house that was directly on the line between the two, the owners did say something about being able to park in both cities, so it's possible some locations have special deals worked out with the parking offices of both.)

There are a couple of places with special arrangements like that. One of them is on Line Street, which parallels Beacon Street in Somerville. As its name implies, the city line runs down the middle of it. People who live there get both city permits, though I think one of them has a special marking limiting its use only to Line Street itself.

I think something similar exists for Russell Street, near Davis Square.

It's also possible that you have the wrong permit. My boyfriend got a couple of tickets for "parking without a permit" right in front of my house, even though the guest permit was right there. When I called the Parking Office, they said that there's a street in A-district that has a similar name to my street, so they've been giving me "A" permits all this time when it should really have been "F." Needless to say, they dismissed the tickets.

(I've also had nothing but positive experiences with the Parking Office folks, amazingly enough. They answer the phone, actually know what you're talking about, and give you a reasonable solution to your problem, at least in my experience. Pretty good for government work!)
