Am I the only one who gets woken up every morning by the paper boy near Rogers Ave/Kidder between 5-6am? He drives around our neighborhood all morning and his car really needs a muffler. It's very loud and has a deep sound that you can hear from far away.

I got up this morning to confirm which paper it is, so I could call and complain. I saw him on Pearson and I think it's the Boston Globe, but I'm not positive.

At least in my part of Davis Square, the same guy delivers the Globe, the NYTimes, and the Wall Street journal. I don't know if the Herald even has home delivery in Somerville; I've never seen it dropped here.

In my neighborhood there are two delivery vehicles, one for the Globe/Times/Journal and one for the Herald. Both are new-looking SUVs, which leads me to conclude that I am in the wrong business (if paper delivery is so lucrative). Whatever happened to the little kids walking around the neighborhood with the canvas bag over their shoulder delivering papers?

They bought themselves SUVs with the medical damages they won for their permanent spine problems.

The Boston Globe stopped having kids deliver the paper quite a few years ago. I believe among the concerns were liability for kids getting injured or going to strangers' houses and being kidnapped. A bit of overkill perhaps, but now its all done by adults.

On my street, the paper gets delivered by a guy in a new-looking SUV. But he drives down the street the wrong way, which drives me nuts.

They both drive up my street the wrong way, as do the garbage and recycling trucks and the ambulance (which I have no trouble with).

The garbage and recycling trucks seem to go the right way. I haven't seen an ambulence, but I have no problem with them going whatever way they have to.

At 5:30 am, i don't really care which way anyone drives .... nobody else is out there.

You should try it some morning. You would be surprised how many people are out at 5:30 am.

I have...there aren't that many people out at 5:30

I live in Cambridge, but What really pisses me off is the public works guy in the truck with the loud speaker/recording saying "Street Cleaning, move your vehicle to the odd numbered side or you will be tagged and towed." It ALWAYS wakes me up about a half an hour before my alarm goes off, and that annoys me more than anything else.

Here on Day Street, they've learned to turn that off exactly when the truck crosses the city line.

Boy, what I wouldn't give for a public works guy who'd do that over on Corinthian...maybe it would've saved me the last two times I got a blinkin' $50 ticket. My problem isn't not realizing that there's street sweeping, or even knowing which side to park on which days of the week...my problem is actually realizing it's still Tuesday, and not Friday.

Omfg, I hate that. I'm still not use to it, either, after living here since April. I still look out the window, half expecting an air raid or something is going on outside.

Tomorrow hide in the bushes waiting for him. When he gets close jump out in front of his car and hurl a brick through his windshield..that'll teach him....

Is getting the paper driver in trouble or fired really an ethical thing to do over a few minutes' sleep?

Date: 2006-09-13 07:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ellf.livejournal.com
Well, I imagine that fixing a car is a relatively expensive thing, and that a paper deliveryman doesn't rake in the dollars.

Perhaps you could wear earplugs if you have a hard time staying asleep? It would work -tomorrow-, as opposed to whenever they get around to canning the guy whose car is noisy.

I was going to say the comment about waiting in the bushes to vandalize the paperboy's van was the funniest thing I've read all day, until I read your comment about waiting in the bushes to fix the paperboy's van. THAT was the funniest thing I've read all day.

The cost of recycling....

I haven't heard the paper "boy" - but I sure do hear the recycling truck. It's hilarious and annoying in equal parts. Sounds like the industrial revolution is being restaged right outside my window. they bacl down the street in a really loud truck and then proceed to crash their way back up the street. *Boom* *Crash* *Bam*

Somehow I doubt a person delivering papers can afford a car at all... isn't that why kids do it? Don't they get paid crap wages?

I just realised my logic may be completely backwards. Feel free to ignore.
