About the Benefit:
TCCI is a non-profit in the Mississippi Gulf area that is resettling people and promoting a future for them that is culturally, historically, and environmentally sound. Derrick Evans, the founder and director, is a descendent of freed slaves who helped to found Turkey Creek, the first such community in the area. Derrick Evans was born and raised in Turkey Creek and then went to Boston College, became an historian, and taught history in Boston for twenty years.
CNN said the following about Derrick Evans on September 27, 2005: “Faster than FEMA, more nimble than the Red Cross, Derrick Evans doesn’t think much about either. All he thinks about is that ocean of need.” (For more information about TCCI, please visit www.turkey-creek.org.)
We are very pleased that Derrick Evans will himself speak at the benefit.
As art is a way of rebuilding, and the people of Turkey Creek need to rebuild every day, we are connected by hope. The Somerville Theatre will be newly renovated and Respond’s effort is an attempt to build bridges within and among dancers, musicians, artists, the people of Boston, and the Turkey Creek community.
This program has been made possible in part through the fiscal sponsorship of the Boston Dance Alliance.
Tickets available at the Somerville Theater Box Office (3 pm to 9 pm) and through Ticketmaster: www.ticketmaster.com
