I'm completely heartbroken.

What should I do in this wonderful city of ours to ease the pain?

What would you do?

When I'm super sad, I like to spend a day by myself at the superbig movie theaters (Boston Common, Fenway). I pay for a matinee, and then spend the rest of the day going from theater to theater. About 3 movies is my limit. There's little a day of movies and scary movie popcorn can't at least numb. :)

If you're looking to be uplifted, you could go to the MFA.

Also, I like books, so spending the better part of a day in a big bookstore with a coffeeshop always makes me feel better.

bring a good book over to harvard to Herrell's and get the vanilla malt ice cream with their fudge sauce, and stake out a corner in the vault

For me it's noodles and a good book at the Porter Exchange building.

Take a book to Draw Seven Park and watch the fish jumping and the boats going through the locks and the sunset and the tide and completely forget to read the book.

It requires driving 15 mins to get to, but I like
to go for a hike in the woods up in the Middlesex Fells.

Go to one of the dog parks and ask people if you can cuddle their dogs.

I like to curl up at the Starbucks in Davis writing in my journal. It's a chain, yes, but much less crowded than Diesel, and when it's cold out they have a fire going with leather comfy chairs.

Oh gosh, I wasn't even thinking about stuff to do downtown.

Here's what to do downtown in nice weather:

Lunch bar at the Union Oyster House (bar food not too ridiculously expensive, plus you might get a hilarious Irish bartender). Walk until you get bored of it, then hop the T to the Isabella Stewart Gardner (right by the MFA, very cheap, unique, gorgeous). Very hard to be unhappy with this.

It's on the other side of the railroad tracks from Assembly Square. Hard to describe how to get there, especially if I don't know whether you're trying to get there by T, car, or bicycle. Instead, I'm going to point you at this Google map. See that empty space between the two railroad tracks on the right, next to the river? That's Draw Seven Park.

Although, since this is [livejournal.com profile] davis_square, perhaps you'd like to visit our local movie theatre instead (or its sister, the Capitol in East Arlington).

yes—scene points don't really matter if you can't think straight. I like Starbucks much better.

Hard to find is the best part -- I'm partial to it because almost nobody knows it's there -- it's not the prettiest park, but it's never crowded or noisy.

my other suggestion is to get something pierced or tattooed

I couldn't tell you. I moved here when I was 22, so never had to find out.

I'm glad everyone else gave you useful suggestions, however. :)

When I'm all melancholy, I head down to the Harvard Bridge (Mass Ave - between Cambridge and Boston) after dark.

You get a really great view of Boston in lights. I usually just stand there, looking out at it, and think.

Yeah, permanent body-modification while not quite in one's right mind. Perfect!

Wake up early on a Saturday morning and walk the bike path into Arlington. Peaceful, quiet, and maybe you can pet people's dogs if you ask nicely.

(1) House parties

(2) Social gathering at the back of the Diesel, early Tuesday evenings. You will be mobbed. You have been warned.

(3) OKCupid. Even if you don't end up with the one night stand it's distracting and will remind you of the number of other fish in the sea.

But closes at 7 pm.

(I hate to keep repeating this, but I don't want a depressed person to wander over there only to find it shuttered.)

I would go down to the Boston Harborfront and watch the seals outside of the aquarium, then retreat to the wall behind the aquarium, away from the crowds, dangle my legs over the harbor and watch the boats come in and the planes fly out.

That's what I did Monday when I was heartbroken. It helped.

I was going to suggest that, too. Assuming you can get there, the Stone Zoo is also in the Fells. I recommend standing in front of the otter enclosure for hours on end. When they stand on their hind legs and chirp at you, chirp back.

If you have access to a car, there are lot of excellent places to go hiking in the area.
