When I'm super sad, I like to spend a day by myself at the superbig movie theaters (Boston Common, Fenway). I pay for a matinee, and then spend the rest of the day going from theater to theater. About 3 movies is my limit. There's little a day of movies and scary movie popcorn can't at least numb. :)
If you're looking to be uplifted, you could go to the MFA.
Also, I like books, so spending the better part of a day in a big bookstore with a coffeeshop always makes me feel better.
Oh gosh, I wasn't even thinking about stuff to do downtown.
Here's what to do downtown in nice weather:
Lunch bar at the Union Oyster House (bar food not too ridiculously expensive, plus you might get a hilarious Irish bartender). Walk until you get bored of it, then hop the T to the Isabella Stewart Gardner (right by the MFA, very cheap, unique, gorgeous). Very hard to be unhappy with this.
Take a book to Draw Seven Park and watch the fish jumping and the boats going through the locks and the sunset and the tide and completely forget to read the book.
It's on the other side of the railroad tracks from Assembly Square. Hard to describe how to get there, especially if I don't know whether you're trying to get there by T, car, or bicycle. Instead, I'm going to point you at this Google map. See that empty space between the two railroad tracks on the right, next to the river? That's Draw Seven Park.
Hard to find is the best part -- I'm partial to it because almost nobody knows it's there -- it's not the prettiest park, but it's never crowded or noisy.
I was going to suggest that, too. Assuming you can get there, the Stone Zoo is also in the Fells. I recommend standing in front of the otter enclosure for hours on end. When they stand on their hind legs and chirp at you, chirp back.
If you have access to a car, there are lot of excellent places to go hiking in the area.
I like to curl up at the Starbucks in Davis writing in my journal. It's a chain, yes, but much less crowded than Diesel, and when it's cold out they have a fire going with leather comfy chairs.
that sounds lovely. Much better than diesel. I went to write a few days ago and it was so busy and cold i ended up feeling even worse ( i teared up. it was mortifying) Next time I'll try out the starbucks... even though i won't get as many scene points.
I would go down to the Boston Harborfront and watch the seals outside of the aquarium, then retreat to the wall behind the aquarium, away from the crowds, dangle my legs over the harbor and watch the boats come in and the planes fly out.
That's what I did Monday when I was heartbroken. It helped.

(3) OKCupid. Even if you don't end up with the one night stand it's distracting and will remind you of the number of other fish in the sea.
