As a reward for my long move up from Pennsylvania, the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts is requiring me to get my car registered and insured... and while I'm more than satisfied with my current insurance company, they informed me today that they won't even bother insuring cars here in MA.

It looks like I'll need to pursue a different route for this -- can anyone recommend a good local insurance agent?

I have USAA on my vehicles, but I had Geico for a long time here and was satisfied with them.

GEICO doesn't do MA. I had them in NY and NH before I moved here. It sucks because they were really awesome. :(

Wow. Well, that's goood to know. I'm pretty happy with USAA but you have to either be in the military or have in immediate family member who was/is - and I know they do MA.

I had Geico on my motorcycles back in 2000 - 2002. Maybe they don't offer it anymore?

I'll second the vote for Amica, I've always had a fantastic experience with them.

Yeah, we have them, they have nice customer service (not that we've ever had a serious accident to test it with).

The Massachusetts car insurance market is pretty much separate from that of the rest of the USA. The three largest companies here are Commerce, Arbella, and Safety -- companies unknown in the rest of the country.

Keep your business local, go see Jack Connolly at Wedgwood-Crane & Connolly Insurance Agency at 19 College Avenue, Somerville MA 02144. The agency's website is located at http://www.wccins.com/ (http://www.wccins.com/).

or Wiseman Insurance on Highland next to the UPS store (or within a door or two). I've used them for 9 years and the few times I needed assistance they were very helpful.

Absolutely agreed - they just set my insurance up for me, and they were so friendly and helpful. Jack really went above and beyond what was necessary to make it easier for me.

Thirding the suggestion for Wiseman. They were the only people who didn't make me feel like an idiot when I bought insurance for the first time.

They do renter's insurance, too.

I use Liberty Mutual for both my Auto and Renters insurance. My agent rocks, and the premiums are great. (By the way... MAKE SURE YOU GET RENTERS INSURANCE!!! It's cheap and will save your a$$ if your downstairs neighbors are idiots and burn the house down!)

My agent is:

Though I agree whole-heartedly with you on the renters' insurance, as a former LM employee I feel I must offer a differing opinion of the company. While I'm sure your experiences have indeed been positive its my feeling that overall their customer service is pretty poor. I could tell horror stories, but the bald truth is simply that some people find themselves completely unable to get the help they need from Liberty, for seemingly no reason at all.

That's sad to hear, though I guess that with most every company out there, there are good and bad stories. I'm happy so far with the service I've received from LM, so that's all I can attest to.

Hi! On a completely different topic, I just moved from PA too :-) What part are you from?

Well, here's what I know having had to shop around for car insurance that works in MA myself recently:

1) If you have access to USAA they are the absolute cheapest you'll get and they are pretty awesome.

2) Everything else pretty much costs the same between insurance companies because I think insurance prices are regulated by MA (agents from two different insurance companies told me this.)

3) Lack of access to #1 and my preference for a company I heard of brought me down to Liberty Mutual and Met Life since they were the only two companies I had heard of before. People at my office strongly recommended against Liberty Mutual. One of the stories I heard involved Liberty Mutual charging someone 6 months' insurance past the date they had canceled their insurance with Liberty Mutual because they didn't give so-many-months notice ahead of time before switching carriers. A total rip-off. Similarly weird and expensive 'hidden rules' revealed by co-workers' stories led me to go with Met Life and so far so good.
