According to today's Boston Herald, an Italian restaurant called Sagra will open in Davis Square within the next two weeks. The article doesn't give the location, but I think it's 400 Highland Ave.
Sagra - Italian for community food festival - will open in the next two weeks under chef Robert DeSimone, whose menu of simple, hearty peasant cuisine is inspired by time he has spent in Le Marche, on the eastern side of central Italy on the Adriatic Sea.
...
Sagra also has an entertainment license, and DeSimone said Italian music and Frank Sinatra-style singers will be booked.

This is correct. According to the website of the Licensing Commission, they took up the following at their November 26 meeting:

400 Highland Ave, Inc. d/b/a 400 Highland Ave. requesting approval to transfer its All Forms Alcoholic Beverages 7 Day Restaurant license to Cibobella, Inc. d/b/a Sagra on the premises situated at 400 Highland Ave., for a Dance license for dancing by patrons and an Entertainment license consisting of audio, four televisions, one projector, floor show and DJ.

Maybe this will be the draw that carries people through the Highland shopping corridor. That block could definitely use some economic perking up.

Why exactly would you want banks and insurance companies to go out of business??? Do you only want businesses that suit your needs? We need an ASSORTMENT of businesses that cater to a variety of people. In my opinion, Davis Square is becoming top-heavy with restaurants and bars.

I've got to agree with Ron on this one, that section of Davis is in desperate need of transformation. Though I don't wish ill on any of the businesses there (nor do I think Ron intended that either), I agree that they need to be moved from street level. In that block alone there's 3 banks and at least 2 insurance type of agencies. Those ought to be moved to a second floor location, opening up retail space for local businesses to move in and expand to bring in more foot traffic. Most of Boston seems to have this concept down pat and it is highly successful! :)
