Where's a good place to shop for carpet?

In particular, for runners for our stairs. I do about 95% of my shopping online now, but for carpets I want to touch 'em and see the color in real light. I know they've got stuff at Home Depot but I'm hoping to find stuff with a bit more character. Driving distance is fine.

I am looking to put in wall to wall carpeting and I stopped in at Cambridge Rug on Cambridge St. (in between inman sq and lechmere, closer to inman) and they were so nice and friendly in there, that I am definitely going to go with them.
