Apr. 23rd, 2007 11:09 amHi Davis Square!
I've decided I want to get more involved in with the arts, the Davis Square/Somerville community, and social activism. Do you know if there are any good resources available that list the organizations that have open meetings/membership in Davis Square or in Somerville? I was interested in the Somerville Arts Council, so I joined their email list, but I'd like something a little more active with meetings and events I could attend on a regular basis. For example, is there a Somerville Young Democrats league? Or some group that does environmental activism? Outreach for youth? Any help would be appreciated
Thanks!

Date: 2007-04-23 05:16 pm (UTC)Somerville Arts Council can always use volunteers, especially for the ArtBeat festival in July, and ArtsUnion stuff in Union Square. If you're on their e-mail list, you'll hear about every art and cultural event that happens in the city, or that involves a Somerville resident. Go to some of them and meet other folks with similar interests.
ARTSomerville - Separate from the Arts Council, but many of the same people. They run the Nave Gallery at the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church.
Somerville Open Studios - huge event coming up May 5 and 6. I bet they can use volunteers, too.
Politics:
Progressive Democrats of Somerville (PDS) have their annual meeting tomorrow at 6:30 at the VNA Assisted Living, 259 Lowell Street. (They also have monthly meetings and lots of committees with more meetings.)
Somerville Transportation Equity Partnership (STEP) have their annual meeting tonight at 7 pm at the VNA Assisted Living. (You'll soon discover that the VNA is a popular place for all kinds of civic meetings.) This organization advocates for the future Green Line extension from Lechmere into Somerville.
There is a Somerville Climate Action group, but I haven't been involved in it and don't recall exactly how to hook up with them. Someone else here should know, though. They had an event in Davis Square a week ago.
The Davis Square Task Force meets every month or two at the TAB Building, 167 Holland St. The next meeting is April 30 at 7 pm.
DARBI (Davis Area Resident-Business Initiative) is a fairly new group of business people and residents. Their web site is http://www.yourdavissquare.com/ .
I recommend subscribing to Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz's newsletter. Sometimes I post it here, but not always.
