Hi All!

Does anyone know of a non-expensive, reliable mover? I just need a couple guys to carry my stuff and a truck to move it literally 3 miles. Thought I would get recommendations from here before the craigslist crapshoot... I need to move July 1 so I would like to book it early as I'm sure it will be a busy day. Just a one bedroom to move, but lots of stairs.

Thanks!! Enjoy this beautiful day.

I moved with Precision Movers last summer and they were really good and their rates were on the lower end. At peak though, it might be a little pricier. Worth checking them out though, for sure. I'm using them again this June (unfortunately... the move, not the movers!)

good luck!

I had a good experience with Dragonfly Movers (http://www.dragonflymovers.com). Although I'm aware that some people have NOT had good experiences with them, they arrived on time for me, gave me a discount because they didn't have to go back and change trucks or get more people after their earlier job that day, and they came in under their estimate.

Last time we moved, we used Wicked Smart Movers (www.wickedsmartmovers.com). They move all the stuff in an out, but you rent and drive the truck. We had two great guys who worked their butts off for us and we didn't really have to do anything, other than pack up the boxes, drive the truck, and direct them as to where the boxes go. They even helped us get our sofa up and over the deck since it wouldn't fit up the stairs (okay, they needed our help with that, but that was the only thing close to heavy lifting we did that day).

This fellow has helped me move several times: Stephen Dean, sgd322@hotmail.com, 617-710-2863. A friend of mine found him on Craigslist and he was so awesome she referred him to everyone she knew, and since I met him, I do, too. He's just a guy who likes to move stuff who has a pickup truck who's looking to make some cash. When I used him he was SO CHEAP as to be unbelievable. ($30 an hour??? For his own sake I kinda hope he's charging a little more now, he spent 3 hours helping me move and I didn't owe him as much as $100?? I seem to recall I gave him extra.)

Caveat: he's not a professional mover, he only has a pickup truck, not a moving truck (I was moving about 1 street over, so it wasn't a problem to drive back and forth over and over... it was raining and the pickup is open, but we used a lot of tarps and shrink-wrapped my mattress), and I don't even know if he's still in business/still in the area. But he's super nice and trustworthy and usually available. At least, that was true as of last July.

In the category of "guys with a truck," I use Thomas, who can be reached at 781-249-6832. I've done three moves with him in the last couple of months, and he's been pretty solid each time. $60 an hour, so more expensive, but he'll bring another guy with him to help and he has a van.

So, this may be out of scope for what you want, but I always go with Nick's.
It's going to be a real move if you go with them, significantly cheaper than Gentle Giant and with at least a 3-man crew, but likely a few hundred bucks.

The idea of moving with a non-bonded mover gives me the heebie-jeebies, which is why I'm willing to shell out a bit more. :)

But that's my rec in the "professional mover" category, as opposed to "guy with a truck" category.

I was going to make the same recommendation. I've only used non-friends/family movers once, so take it FWIW, but we had an excellent experience. We had 2BR, but two items that had to be sent out the window because they didn't fit down the stairs (extra charge for this), and about 70 million books, moving 3rd floor to 3rd floor, and I think it was around $1000 (I was extremely pregnant at the time, so doing it ourselves wasn't an option). Those guys hauled @ss for us.

I just moved with Marathon Movers. I live with roommates, so I didn't have a ton of stuff, but they showed up on time, were polite and efficient, and came in under their estimate--even though they also got a parking permit, which wasn't included in the estimate.
