Hi, all...I live near Teele Square, and my roommate and I are looking for the best deal on high speed internet service. So far, our best bet seems to be RCN. Do any of you use RCN for cable internet? What do you think of it? Are there any fantastic deals available to Somervillians that you want to let us in on?

Thanks for your help. The roomie and I are currently in dialup hell. Please send us a floatie.

I'm using RCN high-speed internet east of you in Winter Hill, and I don't have many complaints. The speed is great. It seems to flake out every couple days (like, randomly disconnect), and while I had to power cycle on my old PC to get it running again, w/my new comp I just have to wait a minute or so for the modem to reconnect and I'm up and running again. It might just be my hardware or something, though, I've never heard of it happening to anyone else.

Don't know of any special deals that aren't already on their website: http://www.rcn.com/specialoffers/bundles_new_boston.php

Good luck!

I'm in Ball Square, and have had RCN for cable internet (and local phone and cable TV) for a year and a half. It's been great for us. Our modem did flake out a couple times in the first few months, but we haven't had any problems for at least a year. When we did have to call with problems, their customer service was always very helpful and patient with our OLD computer (it was my roomie's PC, still running windows 95!). Now, we have two computers connected, and they were very helpful when I called for assistance in setting up the router.

I lived in Teele and had service through RCN for a few years. The service itself was ok, but I ended up having a billing dispute with them that took 9 months to resolve. Be prepared to spend 45 minutes on hold before you can talk to a human about anything.

We use RCN, and we live just off Holland. It's a good price and, compared to Comcast, much much more reliable. Sometimes it takes them a while to make changes (like cancelling extra voicemail service) but so far it only goes out a couple times a year, and then only for a few hours at a time.

You can also get the internet cheaper if you get phone and/or cable as part of a package deal.

Yup - I live in Teele and I've had RCN for two years, no problems. It is SO much cheaper with cable and phone in a package (well, if you were going to get cable anyway).

I live down near the hospital, have had RCN for 3 years, and have been mostly very satisfied. Sometimes the cable modem poops out, thugh that hasn't happened in about a year now. (I think some of the outages were due to the energy problems a couple of summers ago.) And when I've called Tech Support they've been very helpful.

No experience with RCN, but I live near Teele and have Comcast cable modem. I'm neutral. No problems (other than one internet blackout for half a day in the five months I've had it) on the one hand, but if you ever call them... well, expect to wait a half-hour to fourty-five minutes before getting through to anyone. People have generally been very friendly and helpful once I did get though, though.
