Yesterday's Globe City Weekly, page 8, has an article about it:

There was incentive to change, of course. As Davis Square customers became younger and more health-conscious, sinful bakery treats, such as Italian rum cakes, the house specialty, became outright sins.

Could La Contessa have used less sugar, cut back on the butter, and offered low-calorie alternatives?

"This place wasn't meant for that, to be honest with you," says [Annette] Serrao, without regret. "Why would you want to taste sawdust, anyway?"

By Tuesday morning, they had baked their last cannoli. The goodies in the glass cases -- lime-green butter cookies, chocolate cupcakes, Neapolitans, cream puffs, and hard anise biscottis -- would be it.

Thanks Ron. It reminds me of the bakery of my youth up in Bedford, MA. It also is gone (but left in the 1980's).

Unfortunately, I can't afford the calories so I did not stop in very often to La Contessa.

I wasn't one of their bigger customers, but I'll miss the fig squares, apple squares, and apple turnovers.
