per [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman's suggestion, I'm crossposting this from [livejournal.com profile] b0st0n...

----

I've gone through the history, but the recommendations for movers aren't helping; I don't need a 'real mover', I need a 'guy with a truck' to help me move a sofa from South Davis Square down to Central Square. It's going down one story in Davis, in an apartment, and in central it's going into the basement of Pandemonium books (will take about 3 minutes to carry it downstairs).

I can't see the job taking very long; the apartment and the store are about 10 minutes from each other, so the only problem is getting it down the stairs at the apartment (the couch won't actually be going *up* at any point; down to ground level, then down into a basement).

That said, I'm at work so I can't go out on the streets and grab a couple 'Two guys and a van' flyers off streetposts, and the ones I've found in the history are all booked for tonight. Anyone got a recommendation or want to make a few $?

How big's the couch? I have an Expedition.

It's 92" long x40" deep x 30" tall. A bit on the bulky side, but not super-heavy, as it's not a sofa bed.

The last time (or maybe next to last) movers were discussed here, there was at least one and I think two recommendations for guys-with-a-truck.

This is what I wrote:

This fellow has helped me move several times: Stephen Dean, sgd322@hotmail.com, 617-710-2863. A friend of mine found him on Craigslist and he was so awesome she referred him to everyone she knew, and since I met him, I do, too. He's just a guy who likes to move stuff who has a pickup truck who's looking to make some cash. When I used him he was SO CHEAP as to be unbelievable. ($30 an hour??? For his own sake I kinda hope he's charging a little more now, he spent 3 hours helping me move and I didn't owe him as much as $100?? I seem to recall I gave him extra.)

Caveat: he's not a professional mover, he only has a pickup truck, not a moving truck (I was moving about 1 street over, so it wasn't a problem to drive back and forth over and over... it was raining and the pickup is open, but we used a lot of tarps and shrink-wrapped my mattress), and I don't even know if he's still in business/still in the area. But he's super nice and trustworthy and usually available. At least, that was true as of last July.

And someone else said:

In the category of "guys with a truck," I use Thomas, who can be reached at 781-249-6832. I've done three moves with him in the last couple of months, and he's been pretty solid each time. $60 an hour, so more expensive, but he'll bring another guy with him to help and he has a van.

I had luck at emove.com, but I think you probably need more advance notice for that.
