[identity profile] jeramiemage.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] davis_square
This morning (around 630ish) when I was on my way out of dunkin donuts (in davis of course) a ring caught my eye that was laying on the ground. It was found directly in front of the store, I asked the few people around if they dropped a ring and noone did.

So for what its worth: The ring is real, it has three stones mounted in a white gold band. The stones are all shaped in three unique shapes, describe to me what the shapes are and what the stones are and i will return the ring to you. I know what it likes to loose jewelry and this ring looks like it has some meaning behind it.

If I don't get any replies to this post with-in two weeks I'm pawning it (like I said there is a limit to my honesty....I know I'm an ass).

Seriously though, if this ring belongs to you e-mail me at Poseidons_Thoughts@yahoo.com with the accurate description and I will reply back to set up a meeting place.

You could try asking at Dunkie's if you could put up a notice with this post on it. Maybe a customer lost it and will see the notice.

I thought the traditional way to lose a ring in a donut shop is to drop it in the donut batter, not notice until the batter has all been made into donuts, and then get all your friends to descend upon the donut shop and eat like cartoon policemen until the ring is found.

But perhaps I have been misinformed.

I remember that story from when I was a kid! The book, not the made-for-school movie. Thanks for the link!

That's a popular bus stop. Try putting a notice up there, on nearby signs and poles.

Did you also call the T's lost and found folks? Someone may have thought they lost the ring on the bus and called them about it?

The T might give you the run around, though.

You should turn it into the police. The fraction of people who read this blog compared to the "real world" is tiny.

If you pawn it and it is reported stolen, you could get really screwed.

If someone loses an expensive ring, they're going to report it to the police: they need to do that so that they can get reimbursed through insurance. If you sell it to a pawn shop, you could get arrested for selling stolen goods... even though you just picked it up off the street.

I agree with the other posters that you should put up notices at the scene, but you should also call the Somerville Police and talk to them about turning it over just to cover your ass. The PD have a chain of custody for things like this, so their honesty doesn't enter into it. IIRC if nobody claims it after some lengthy amount of time then they'll give it back to you free and clear.

Posting about the ring in Live Journal won't stop you from going to jail: how many people who walk through that area do you think actually read this thing? One percent?

I agree he should go to the cops - but come on. The likelihood of 1) Somerville cops having time to go after a ring thief is pretty nil, and 2) The cops actually trying to charge someone for something like that is pretty nil as well.

That being said, you can see a copy of the law in MA regarding lost property here: http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/stusmast_ch134_1_7.htm

Basically you report it to the cops and if in one year no one claims it, its yours.

This LJ community only has 1000-ish members. I would suggest posting on Craigslist in the Lost/Found section. This ring sounds a lot like the one you found, though the owner thinks they lost it at the Pru:

they just had a feature on fox 25 last night about how some lady had lost her ring, it somehow ended up being aired on the news, and the woman who found it was able to return it.

go on the news! you get to be a hero! :D

It's not your ring. Turn it in to the police and hope that the rightful owner finds it. At the very least you can feel smug about your good deed, no?

I agree; I know that the Boston police have logs of all goods sold to pawn shops for people who have been robbed to go through to see if there stuff is there. (My husband went through binders and binder of info when our apartment was robbed in Allston; it's possible that the Somerville PD will also have lists of pawned items)

The 100% legal thing to do is to report it to the police and do nothing with it for a year. After a year, it's "found property" and you own it--if you dispose of it before the year is up, you're liable.

Props to you for posting and all, just in case no one had said it yet.
