Several months ago I was asking in here for salons that people would advise, and ended up going to Salon Luna. Now, while they did an awesome red for my color, the first cut I had there was ...okay, but not anything special. The second time....well, I don't recommend Diana (I think it was Diana). I had a picture, told her what I wanted, and have abut three inches LESS hair than I asked for in something that, while it looks good, is not remotely what I wanted or showed her.

So I'm in the market for another new hair salon. My hair is now far shorter than I want it, so if anyone has recommendations for a place/person that is also good at helping hair grow out gracefully, I'd love to hear about it/them! In general, looking for someplace that's nearby (I do have a car though), not overpriced, does great color (red, specifically), and people who will LISTEN.

Slightly more specfically, Salonika just moved in down the block from me. I can't find many reviews online about them, so does anyone have one they can offer on that place?

I love Salon CU in Ball Square but have no experience with growing out hair or coloring.

Thirded. I had a great experience at Salon Cu after folks at this community recommended it...but then I'm a dude, so you might want to read the experiences of people whose situations are more like your own.

Judy Jetson salon outside Porter sq is absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend it.

I got the worst haircut of my entire life at Judy Jetson's...not to write off the whole salon, but I wouldn't go back there or recommend it for folks with shorter hair. Spending a month looking like the Dutch Boy mascot with an undershave was enough to put me off. :P

I've received great cuts and color at Salon Femia, it's across the street from Salonika. Daniela is my stylist and she's great at helping my hair through its awkward "growing it out" stages. I used to be a Liquid devotee, but my work schedule makes it hard for me to keep appointments...and Femia takes walk ins with no sweat.

I have heard that Judy Jetson has some really excellent stylists and some not-so-good stylists, and that you have to know which ones to ask for. (Sadly, I don't know which are the best, but ...)

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience there. I have been going for years, but I see Jennifer and she is great.

I have to keep that in mind - I've been wanting to check out Pyara for ages. I actually had to get my hair cut at the Hair Cuttery today because I couldn't make it back for Friday morning. Do you have any experience with their more spa-ish stuff, like facials and pedicures? I've been looking to check out some of that stuff for a while too.

I've never seen it reviewed online, but I really like Maggie at Salon M, who, while she isn't warm and friendly, neither is she mean, and she has never given me anything but great haircuts, especially while I'm growing stuff out.

My boyfriend goes to Salonika and he's never gotten a cut there he doesn't like..or more importantly, that I haven't approved of (well, except when he got a wiffle but that was all on him).

I go to 98 North Salon by North Station, on Washington St. and I can recommend them highly.

I'm a guy, but I used to have my haircut at Solonika, but the guy who did it is no longer there. Seemed like a decent group of people, but I cant justify $40 for a haircut anymore, now that I've got a mortgage.

Keri at Amal Niccoli is helping me grow my hair out (including not letting me shave it all off because it's not looking good these days!). She's always given me great short hair cuts, and I've got difficult hair (fine, very very thick, with cowlicks). She's also been good when I bring a picture in to say if she thinks that cut will work with my hairline and face shape or not, which I've never had another stylist do!

Although it's not exactly in the Davis area, DHL Stylists in Harvard Square are amazing. I hear Rob and Dale are both excellent, though I can only speak for Dale myself. And it's fun there--it looks like a cross between Spencer gifts and a sci-fi convention, with some liberal politics thrown in.

I received the worst haircut of my life there. Yes, they are nice people, but they neither listened to what I wanted nor did the cut actually work with my hair. After a good night's cry, my boyfriend and I went back the next day (at least they never tried to claim the cut didn't suck), and we ended up going much shorter than I'd originally planned because it was the only way to fix it. A few months later, I got a haircut at one of the barbershops on Holland that was way better than what they did (and a fraction of the price, of course). I know others who've had similar experiences at DHL as well.

I'd hang out with them socially, but I'd never let them bring a cutting implement near my head ever again.

(On the positive side, I've had a cut with Mario at Mario's, which was great, and also Daniela at Salom Femia who I adore. I go to Linda at SF for waxing and she's fab, too.)

I've been going to Salon Luna for a few years, but always with Jenn or Matthew. I'd definitely try again with one of them if you liked the color. I've also never had any bad vibes from choosing jenn over matt, etc.

Soula is pretty good with short hair, but when she's in a bad mood she can be quite unpleasant. I've heard bad things about Angela's cuts. For the $45, I think I'm going to look around some.

I could not agree with you more regarding the bad mood ( and I thought it was just me ). On the other hand, Soula is quite talented with her scissors.

Diego - Jadie. Fabulous. I have had hair of many lengths with her and she cuts the hair of several of my friends all who have different lengths, waviness, etc.

hands down go to Salon Cu in Ball Square =)

I've gone to all the stylists and liked all of them, but my personal favorite is Umberto...if you're into really sassy funky styles he's your man...if you want to go a little prettier and more fem Carlo is your man =)

But price is VERY reasonable...I don't like bleaching my hair anymore so I do one process color and cut for about $70 =)

p.s.

as a reference point I have really short layered hair, a little spiky in the back and longer in the front but not that generic spiky short in the back long in the front =)

my cut came out really unique and he worked with me to make sure that I not just liked, but REALLY LOVED the cut i walked away with =)

I got a very decent cut at Salonika -- a semi-stylish men's cut, nothing fancy, no color. The owner (I think) cut my hair as she was having an animated conversation with her friend; they both spoke a mix of Greek and English and didn't speak to me at all. Little kids ran around the shop, laughing and playing. It was a crazy atmosphere but my hair looked good.
