Hi all. I was hoping some people could give me suggestions on a place to go for a pedicure? I've never had one, so have no idea what price range to expect, or how to tell if a place is good or not. I figure word of mouth is the best advertising there is. So, any suggestions? Doesn't have to be in Davis Square, per se, but if it is, that's great. Also, if anyone can tell me what was good/bad about the place they went, that would be helpful.
Thanks so much!

I tried to go to the Square Nail once. It was 3pm and they said they were closing at 4 and were no longer taking customers. Evidently, they can only take one client at a time, and only one per hour. I'll never even look in their direction again.

Date: 2007-06-27 06:29 pm (UTC)If you don't want to go there because it's too expensive or because you want walk-in convenience, that's perfectly fair. Other places are faster and cheaper, absolutely. But that "I'll never even look their direction again" sounds like an awfully harsh dismissal of a place full of really nice and dedicated people.
What they are is a small, independent place with a small number of very skilled employees, they give highly personalized service, nothing automated, they remember who you are and what you like and are unfailingly kind and friendly and welcoming, and they use all-natural, high-quality salon products. If that's not for you, fine, but you make it sound like they're mean and/or have ridiculous hours, which is simply not true. Considering how few employees they have, they actually are remarkably flexible -- and if you make an appointment, they'll often stay later than normal closing time for you.
So if that's not the kind of service you want, don't go there, but there's no need to suggest there's something wrong with them for not being exactly like every other place out there. I've had to stop going there since I lost my job because I can't afford it any more -- but I still like them as people and as a salon. (They even once gave me a discount right after I lost my job, just because they knew me and felt sorry for me. I didn't go back, though, because I didn't want to push it. But that's the kind of people they are.)
Re: Square Nail
Date: 2007-06-27 06:37 pm (UTC)Square Nail is actually also a decent deal for a french manicure if that's what you want, because their mani is $20 whether regular or french. Most cheaper salon places charge $12-$15 for a regular mani but $16-$18 for a french. So if that's what you want, Square Nail isn't actually much more expensive, and you get all the other benefits of their cozy atmosphere, nice people, and natural products. If you want to check them out, that's what I'd suggest doing (rather than starting with a $40 pedi).
