This doesn't seem to have come up recently so I thought I would ask. My bike got stolen while I was at work today. Sob story yes, but it was probably a bit to much bike for me anyway and I'm not terribly surprised it got stolen.

I'd like to get another bike that is a bit more appropriate to what I'm going to do with it. Mainly 1) daily commute (~8miles) and 2) bike the Minuteman 1-2 times a week. I'd also like something I'm not overly concerned with getting stolen so a used bike is preferable to a new bike. I was wondering if anyone had experience with Bikes not Bombs or could recommend another good place to get used bikes in the area? Bonus points for intro reasonably priced bike maintenance classes.

For classes, Broadway Bicycle is closer than BNB and just as cool. They also sell used bikes, though I've never bought one there. They do excellent maintenance work.

Even though you re already planning to buy another bike, I hope you reported this theft to the police. You may want to watch for your bike on Craigslist, too.

that’s fortunate for you (and, hopefully, fortunate for Broadway Bike Shop as well!)

I second Broadway Bicycle Shop. I've never been myself, but always heard good things, and it is similar to Bikes Not Bombs.

Bikes Not Bombs is definitely worth the trip, though. I had a bike built up there for only $200 (a used frame, new parts) and it was fantastic. I love the place and the people that work there are great. Not to mention the whole organization does a ton of good in the community.

I agree, BNB is great. Only catch is, they take awhile to build your bike. I had to wait about 2 months, if I recall correctly. Maybe things have gotten faster since they've moved. I would call them to make sure. But yes, big points for teen vocational training.

bikes not bombs is generally a bit cheaper than broadway, like 200 for a new bike as opposed to 230. it's neat cuz you can get a bike custom built, it sucks because that can take a long time. i've also heard of some not-very-well-built bikes coming from bnb. however, they do have an amazing program in terms of donating their bikes overseas and offering build a bike programs for kids. i don't think that they have programs for adults though.

broadway has an excellent selection, a lot of women workers (though i guess bnb does too), and they do offer introductory classes, i think it's like 115 for 5 sessions.
