Last night in Davis Square, around 8:50 pm, I heard a lot of loud booms, though I could not see anything in the sky other than occasional 'sheet' flashes of light.

This was far too early to be Boston's fireworks. Anyone know what town's display I was hearing? Newton? Waltham?

Heh. Before I got to your second paragraph, I was pretty sure someone had broken into your account and was trolling.

Yeah, I heard it too, actually, but didn't think anything of it. No idea about the answer to the question.

Yeah, this had such great potential to be a subtle dig at all the "I saw some kind of commotion...what happened?" posts. But then it turned out to be one of those posts!

At about 9pm last night there was a mini-fireworks display over the Charles when they were playing the 1812 Overture. Maybe that was it.

They had some fighter jets flying over the Esplanade to accompany one of their pieces (possibly the 1812 Overture?), and those things are LOUD. That could quite possibly be what it was, because 8:50 is roughly the time I heard it somewhere else.

Nah, it was definitely fireworks. Unless there was actually antiaircraft fire.

As someone who has sat on top of the library at Tuft's before for the Fourth, I can say that there are numerous fireworks displays going off pretty much all evening on the Fourth of July. You name a city and they are probably shooting off fireworks - Medford, Newton, etc.

Based on this schedule it probably wasn't either:

I assumed it was just regular people shooting off fireworks in their backyards. There seemed to be a fair amount of that going on in my neighborhood.

Could have also been thunder?

No, not thunder. What I heard around the same time had the multiple pops of fireworks (or anti-aircraft fire!).

I was thinking anti-aircraft fire myself...

I couldn't see the fireworks due to a house and tree that were in the way but the flashes were coming from the direction of Arlington. Don't know how close they were but I definitely saw and heard them as well.

someone was lighting off what seemed to be almost professional fireworks over in Alumni Fields right across from the Tufts Gym. My house abuts that field and I was surprised by how amazingly good they were. They weren't overly loud though, maybe a few booms.

I'm on Spring Hill, and there were extensive (fancy) fireworks outside my window at about that time. If I had to guess they launched them from Conway Park.
