hello davis square-ites,
i know this is not necessarily about davis square, but i trust your advice over the boston communities:

my mom is coming to town for a technology/education conference and i want to take her and her colleagues (youngish-baby boomers) out for a night of dining and dancing- this would be easy for me to arrange if they were visiting somerville, but they are being dropped off near faneuil hall on wednesday evening and will not have their own forms of transportation. this is not an area that i ever frequent, and i need some help.

are there any places that feature live music, like folksy irish or salsa stuff? glowing restaurant reviews would also be very welcome!

You could just have them take the T to Davis (or the commuter rail to Porter) and meet you, if you'd rather entertain them in your own neighborhood.

Hmmm. I went to Hennessy's on St. Patrick's Day, which I imagine is the worst day of the year for Fratness, yet I didn't feel like killing myself. They did have Irish step dancers come in, but I've never been there otherwise, and it might be awful, with crummy (but live) cover bands and the like.

As for glowing restaurant reviews, I know others think it's too obvious, but I still love Trattoria Il Panino, just off Hanover St. It's a bit pricey, but I love the atmosphere, have always had lovely service there, and the lobster ravioli is to die for. Also the grapefruit gelato at the Gelateria around the corner is better than you'd think.

if that's the place I'm thinking of...

it's fabulous, but yes, pricey, and reservations are recommended.

as in, "not typified by lots of drunk obnoxious white college-aged guys from local fraternities."

I heard the black rose was good that's right on the corner of state by faneuil hall. It's also easily accessible on the aquarium T stop. Good Irish music and supposedly good pub food. Charming Irish wait staff as well.

The Burren sometimes will have irish/folk singers playing in the back. You will need to check their calendar though. You can see that here:

Otherwise, Ryles in Inman is really nice if they want to go and dance. It is also a decent jazz bar. http://www.rylesjazz.com/
Also, across the street (sort of diagonally) is the best Indian food in the entire HUB. Punjabi Dhaba.
