My mom is coming to visit this weekend, and she really likes going antiqueing. Does anyone know if there are any antique stores in the Somerville/Cambridge area? I honestly haven't noticed any, but then, I haven't been looking.

Thanks!

i think there's one on mass ave? er, or maybe it's an antique lighting store... it has the word "antique" on it.

Over by the Porter shopping mall on the Cambridge Savings Bank side, there is an antique (second hand) store across the street. Thy're the ones that always have furniture outside for sale. Sometimes they have neat knick-knacks. There's also a fantastic one on Mass Ave between Porter and Harvard. (mentioned below, I think)

There's a lovely consignment shop on Highland Ave about a block away from Porter.

There's an antique shop called the "Consignment shop" or "Consignment gallery" or something on Highland outside of Davis Sq [363 Highland]. It's about a block west of Willow. They sell furniture and home decor things including absolutely adorable tiny tea sets that I have to convince myself not to buy every time. It's pretty big and has beautiful things.

Bah, go to Needham. Tons of antique stores there. Also lots of banks. And bitchy soccer moms in SUVs. Fun for the whole family.

(Bitter about my hometown? No!)

Not quite Cambridge/Somerville, but there's a antique store just before Arlington Center, right near where Mass Ave and Broadway meet up. It's in the basement underneath that maternity clothing store.

Is there still one on the south side of Somerville Avenue as you approach Union Square from the west? There at least used to be one.

How antique? If you want mid-20th-century classics, try abodeon.

have you thought about the really cool antique place on Highland? I used to always walk past it, and it had some really great stuff.

There's also a place right on the McGrath next to the peanut factory.

it's about a block down from the place that has the really cool ceramic and iron work - you know the one with all the jade plants in the windows?

ah. I think it's not far from the first laundrymat near the Gulf Station; if you walk up Highland from Davis, you'll see it on the left fairly quickly.

I second the Cambridge Antique Marketplace right near Lechemere. It's 5 floors of nothing but antiques and old stuff. Antiquer's heaven.

201 Msgr. O'Brien Highway. It's kind of diagonal from the Dunkin' Donuts over in that area. They're open from 11-6. They have a parking lot.

It's one of my favorite places to poke around in the whole of the Boston area. Hope you guys have fun!!

I think Sadye and Company has really interesting stuff, and it's priced well for the quality. It used to be on Mass. Ave. near the MIT Museum, but it moved to either Hampshire or Broadway near Inman Square. Call them for directions at 617) 547-4424.

There's a great store called 20th Century Provenance on Broadway across from the temporary library site at the Longfellow School. They have some really cool Art Deco stuff!

My parents are big time antiquers too & I've gone with them when they come up to visit. We went to the one on McGrath that people have mentioned. Five floors of stuff, ample parking, a little snack bar. They usually have flyers for other nearby places. The was a big one on Cambridge street that we found from them that was just packed with furniture. It was huge.

The prices in the Boston area are pretty high though. My parents also took me up into new Hampshire looking for stuff and we saw the same sort of china cabinet for $300 in NH and $600 here (and not in as nice shape). That may not matter if your mom isn't on a mission to get something in particular. (Interesting tidbit, apparently there is a "season" among antique shoppers for buying dining room sets, in the late summer. Go figure.)
