hello, davis square
we've recently moved from minneapolis and we have some questions about our new state:

1. where can i, a woman, get a stylish hair cut without spending a bundle of money, and not stray too far from the porter/davis area or from the tufts area.

2. if we are paying a deposit when we buy pop in plastic bottles, does that mean there are ways to get that deposit back? how does this work?

3. can we get to the IKEA store on the T or by communter rail?

this is the most helpful community i've found concerning our relocation! keep it up, helpful people!

1. i got a recommend to Mario's in Davis Sq. and I love what they did.

2. You can get your $ back at most large stores. They have machines you feed the bottles into. Of course, the store has to sell the kind of soda you bought for them to guarantee taking it back.

3. I think there's a shuttle from the commuter rail. try the IKEA web site.

They did that when they first opened.

1) how much is "a bundle of money"? you can get great haircuts in the area for $40-60.

2) at the entrance to any supermarket (or near the entrance) there are bottle and can deposit machines, where you will get a voucher for your deposit.

3) nope.

You know...I'm decidedly not stylish, so I have no answer for #1.
2. Yes - you can bring it to a redemption center or to a store that takes bottle returns. The supermarkets take them, as do liquor stores. (I'm not certain on convenience stores anymore) Make sure they are clean and have the labels on them.
3. No, and no. The commuter rail does go to Stoughton (but not on weekends) as well as to Randolph/Holbrook, as well as buses that go out to Randolph - but you'd need a taxi from any of those stops. Not recommended! Use Zipcar (www.zipcar.com) instead, unless you have someone willing to drive you down there.

I'd absolutely use ZipCar to get to IKEA - especially since you have that bit about getting your purchases home once you've gone there.

Plus, there are a bunch of ZipCar only spots right next to the doors.

2. Almost all grocery and liquor stores allow for bottle returns. Bottles should be rinsed and free of their caps, cans should be rinsed. Many places have self-service return machines that will give you a receipt that you cash in at a register.

3. A little web research shows that there's a commuter rail stop in Stoughton (http://mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/rail/lines/stations/default.asp?stopId=203&lat=42.123818&lng=-71.10309), and it looks like the IKEA (http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IkeaNearYouView?storeId=12&catalogId=11001&langId=-1&StoreName=stoughton) is 3 miles from the stop. No idea if there is a bus from the rail stop to IKEA or not.

1) I've had good experiences at both Mario's (Holland Street) and Judy Jetson's (Mass Ave, near Porter). The latter can get expensive, depending on what you need, but as a wash-and-trim kind of gal, I've been satisfied with their cheaper services.

2) Others have this covered.

3) Not really, but I believe IKEA Stoughton has an arrangement with Zipcar (http://www.zipcar.com/press/releases/press-34) that makes it more accessible to people without cars. Obviously, that's less helpful to people who don't drive at all, but Zipcar has a pretty loyal following in this community, especially among T-dependent folk. (Sorry if that's too far removed from your original question.)

2. You can bring your cans and bottles to the machines in the Shaw's in Porter. Feed them in; the machine will spit out a receipt; bring that in and they'll give you money.

3. No, but I just want to put in another vote for Zipcar. They are awesome if you've no car. Plus they have a deal where your Zipcar gets super-preferred parking at Ikea, and your Zipcard gets you two-for-one meals at Ikea, etc. etc. And they pay gas and insurance. Awesome!

1) Mario's is awesome. In fact, I just got my hair cut today. I see Alan; I really like him and he does a great job.

1. salon cu! it's around $35 for a women's cut and carlos is amazingly friendly and very talented. i've got very think hair in a very short cut and he spent a TON of time thinning it out, layering, etc.

i've also been to judy jetson's, which was nice, but around $46 for a cut...and i felt a bit more comfy at salon cu.

I'm spent my childhood in Cleveland and we called it pop. In my teens we lived in Upstate New York where pop is soda, so I trained myself to say soda. The true locals here call it tonic. I'm about ready to call it "non-alcoholic bottled beverage" and leave it at that. :-)

Everyone I know from upstate called it pop. What area were you from?

Actually, now that I think of it, you're right. It was when I went off to college that I started calling it soda. In Rochester I called it pop.

I spent the first 23 yrs of my life in SE Mpls. I too, tried to resist the 'Soda' conversion, but gave up when no one knew what I was talking to. And don't bother asking for 'brats' from the meat market or sausage carts...your choices are Italian, sweet or spicy. Welcome to the neighborhood!

... Though as of the last few years you can actually buy real brats at the supermarkets. For years and years, they would only carry those horrible pre-cooked brats, if at all. Now Johnsonville brats are a regular at most medium-large to large supermarkets I've been to, and Kayem (based in Chelsea) brats are in most places as well (and pretty good too).

for years, the only time I would ever get to eat brats were if they got made during the couple of days I was back in Wisconsin for Christmas every year. Most years this didn't happen, what with Christmas dinner and other such things. My mom moved back to WI several years back, and on several occasions before brats became more commonplace shipped me a case (6 pounds!!!!) of Usinger's brats for Christmas, which is possibly the coolest thing of all time.

It would be cool to get one at a cart though.

1. Camberville posted this good review of M (http://camberville.blogspot.com/2007/07/m-salon.html).

3. I know people that have walked it but it's a royal pain and it's like 45-60 minutes from the nearest commuter rail stop. Get a Zipcard or just post something on Craiglist saying you want to carpool with someone else who is going.

something different:

2. If the $0.05 isn't all that important to you, leaving your bottles out the night before garbage pickup means you'll make some needy soul a little more happy. It is all but guaranteed that someone will go through your recycling bin over the course of the night .. someone who probably needs the five cents more than you.

I love the guy that comes down my street on recycling day with his bicycle loaded up with bags of cans and bottles. I try to put them out in ways that he can get them easier.

on #2) I'd find it incredibly difficult and annoying (not to mention smelly) to deal with bottles and cans when I've gotten $30 worth built up, so I'd just save them for my next trip out to my parents' in rural MA, where we have a liquor store with a drive through redemption center. Just load all the cans into a hopper, and sending them down a conveyor belt, it counts them really quickly.

But I don't know of any around the Davis area. Or around metro Boston, for that matter. So I'm not really any help. Haha.
