I can't find this on their site at all, hence asking here(and yes, it probably IS a stupid question); does anybody know if the Boston Sports Club in Davis is going to have a pool?  I want to join a gym, but I'd love to find one with a pool.

hmm, well, it's on the second floor of the building. i suppose the place could have a pool on the second floor but that seems kind of weird to me.

Well, it's certainly possible, but I doubt Bally is willing to pay the insurance/structural engineering costs.

Oh, like there's ultimately any difference.

I'm going to be $30K+ in the hole by the time I graduate, so they'd damn well better give me free gym time!

Also, given that the first floor is a CVS and the third floor is offices, I don't see where a 10-foot-deep pool could go.

lap pools are usually only around 4' deep, but unless they will also have a pool area in the basement, I doubt it will have one.

The basement is also office space.

Come on, you can't tell me you haven't felt a deep-seated desire to dump several tons of water onto a CVS.

btw the bally's in porter has a pool.

bally's is a bit skanky and the pool was closed more often than open the 16 months or so I went (I did, however, get a $15/month no commitment, no credit card or SSN needed plan--they were/are desperate for members)

Ballys has a pool, in porter, and while it's a little skanky it's hella cheap if you don't let them bully you into buying more than you want.

The website unfortunately doesn't mention a pool:

The Kennedy School has a fantastic pool (http://www.somerville.k12.ma.us/education/components/docmgr/default.php?sectiondetailid=6441&catfilter=689&PHPSESSID=2093e6e2516e031f2e1368e2a6a06459). Admittedly, it's not a gym, but it's cheap, especially if you're a Somerville resident, it's a full-size (50 m, as opposed to 25 m at Bally's), clean, and nice. They have decent lessons there as well. I'm hoping to get my butt in gear to take adult beginner classes this fall so I can stop doing the flailing around in the water thing I tend to do.

Whoah. How cheap? Never thought of Kennedy.

+1 on the Kennedy School pool. I think it's like $4 per visit for Somerville Residents with monthly passes available.

It does, however, have an awful website. Schedule/Policies/Fees tucked inside word documents? Are you kidding? Who designed this? The elementary school students?

$5/visit for somerville residents, monthly pass is i think a little cheaper, but only if you go three times a week.

$6/visit for out-of-towners, same deal w/ monthly passes.

Just an FYI, the JFK pool is 25yds, not 50m. But it IS a nice pool. I've not been to Bally's so I don't know how big it is, but if it's smaller than the JFK pool then it's not 25m.

As mentioned it's $4 per swim, or you can get a 2-month pass for $65. The downside is that the hours are rather limited; summer lap hours are 6p-7:45p M-R. And yes, their website sucks. But the swimming is nice.

Note that they'll be closed Aug 24 - Sep 9.

The hours are even more limited during the school year, when swim teams use the pool for practice. Which is why I quit going there.

I must admit that I've only been swimming there since April, so I have no idea what it's like September through March. So I'll have a better idea next month. Does swimteam really practice in the 7-8:45p timeframe?

Date: 2007-08-16 02:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] syntheticnature.livejournal.com
Yeah, they do. I think that several schools' teams practice there, so they do it at all different times. When I was going to the Kennedy pool, they had signs up saying that the Matignon HS team was about to start practicing in the evenings.

The BSC in Watertown has a pool. I wanted to sign up there for that reason but it was too much $$$

It'd be closed if it weren't in the same building with a US Army research lab.

The arsenal has not been in use for over 10 years and was sold to the town of Watertown. In the past 5 years parts have been turned into restaurants and art facilities. The BSC opened about 1 1/2 years ago. There hasn't been any research activity since the early 80's. They keep the signs and other artifacts on/around the building though, I assume for being a historic building. Being from Watertown I'm very familiar with the defunct arsenal.

Really? There's a big sign saying "U.S. Army Materials Research Lab" that's in good repair and a whole bunch of signage on the parking lot about having federal ID to show to the guard. I simply assumed it was some of the work we could stand the Russians to steal, like our innovations in nylon.

Don't know why no one has mentioned yet, but the Somerville Y has a pool. Very cheap to join, too.

the somerville Y is cheap, but their pool is awful. it is 3 lanes and is a "short pool" like bally's (under 25 yards). hate hate hate the short pool.

Kennedy Pool is the way to go. they have morning lap swim MWF 6:15-7:45 as well as the evening hours mentioned. the master's team works out T/TH mornings with a coach (there are additional fees for that).

I've heard rumors of a nice pool at Tufts, but I think you have to be a student/employee to use it.

pool related question

out of curiosity, whats the deal with the pool next to the dilboy stadium? every year i think it cant possibly be open because it looks so rundown on the outside, yet there are people swimming there. are there hours posted somewhere or something?
