As some of you may have noticed, I've made some changes to this community's profile page.

I added a rule encouraging posters to use the tag system, added a fairly arbitrary set of "Useful Local Links", and edited the "Interests" list, mostly to remove names of defunct businesses and add names of new ones. (I can't quite bring myself to remove "someday cafe" yet, so it's still there.)

Please comment here if you'd like to see any further changes on the profile page -- more or fewer links, more or fewer interests, etc. Have I left out anything important?

I've also been retro-tagging this community, starting from its first post and working my way forward towards the present day. Right now I'm up to June 2006. There sure are a lot of posts about gyms, hair, laundry, and tailors! Once I'm done with this first pass, I'll be asking other folks for input on how to reorganize the current tags -- especially the currently overbroad or overlapping categories such as "local food", "dining", "restaurants", "local businesses", "business services", "civic", "public services", and the like.

Based on previously expressed interest, I've invited elements, prunesnprisms, and enochs_fable to join the tagging effort. (And you too, laurenhat, if you're still interested.) If you want to participate in a detailed discussion of tagging, please use the davis_meta community, to avoid boring everyone else.

Great idea, Ron. Maybe you can edit your entry to more explicitly suggest that people who want to discuss how the d_s should be run join d_meta to do so? I just joined myself, and I think all the mods should be on it.

I also agree that we could use more granular tags than many of the ones we have now. It's a big job, though, so thanks for doing it!

There's a fine line to walk between having an overwhelming number of very specific tags, and an insufficient number of overly general ones. Right now "business services" is much too broad, covering everything from tattoos to taxes. But I'm continuing to put posts into that bin for the time being, just so I don't lose track of them entirely.

I upped the "Number of journal entries to show on recent entries page" from 20 to 40, just because I think it will make the more popular tag pages easier to search. I frankly don't know what this really should be set to.

How about a gentle reminder not to post shit for harvard quare, Central, Kenmore, Kendal, Medford, Arlington, fucking Finland...

There are a lot of communities out there. this one is for DAVIS and I get torqued when i see the same post on my friends page 11 times in a row.

I agree to a large extent, but for a lot of folks, 'greater Davis Square' does extend out to Union Square at least. Maybe they'll have their own LJ community at some point.

I just added that rule about tagging a few weeks ago, and it still sounds sort of tentative because I expect we'll be reorganizing some of the taxonomy soon. If you want to suggest different wording, please do (either here or over in davis_meta). Meanwhile, I'll move it up as you requested.

I edited the profile to incorporate some of your wording. I don't want to bold the request yet, not until tags are better organized.
