Is there anywhere in the immediate Davis Square area where I can get flax seed oil?

edit I mean the kind you put in food; sorry to be unclear.

To eat or to use as varnish? If you're looking for the latter, you can get it at TAGS. Don't eat it; the so-called "boiled" linseed oil typically isn't, it's denatured with methanol. And of course observe the usual combustion safety precautions.

No bad at all. If not for the modern practice of denaturing the stuff, they'd be effectively identical; you could eat wood treatment and treat wood with the stuff from the health food store (you still can treat wood with the stuff from the health food store, but my suspicion is that it's much more expensive.)

Flaxseed oil and linseed oil are different things.

I may be completely misunderstanding things. Both are indeed products of the flax seed; the only difference of which I am aware is that "boiled" linseed oil has been removed from the seed using a solvent - my understanding is that methanol is what's used for this.

Am I completely off my rocker?

[checks Wikipedia] Ah, I hadn't realized that linseed oil also comes from the flax plant. The difference is that linseed oil uses a solvent extraction process instead of simply being pressed. "Boiled" linseed oil is linseed oil with metallic driers added to make it dry faster.

I bought ground flax seed at Shaw's, and I believe they also had flaxseed oil. I think it's in the world foods/sorta hippie aisles near the produce -- don't remember exactly where.

Hey, I was on the grocery run.

Yup, they had flaxseed oil. It's definitely in the "sorta hippie natural food" shelves. I remember having trouble finding it, it turned out to be at the bottom of the shelves (unusual for such a high ticket item.)

You can get flax seed oil at any drugstore. I've even seen it at Target.
