Some of you may remember me from asking about mattresses (ended up going with Sleepy's...the girl I got helping me was so nice and tried everything she could to get me a good deal). So now with one need of the body met, I come to you O wise and much-knowing ones of the Davis and Porter Square area...

Where's a nice cafe I can curl up in for a while that /isn't/ Diesel? No offense against Diesel, of course...it's a lovely cafe that's an excellent meeting/first date spot, but...I'm used to slightly quieter cafes where one can actually use a normal speaking voice to be heard over the (low, but still there) din of the other caffinated multitudes.

I and my stack of books I need to read thank you.

Well, there's True Grounds up in Ball Sq, and Sherman over in Union. Sherman is my personal favorite: the food there is fantastic. Service can be slower than some other cafes, but it's still way faster than a restaurant.

Simon's, on Mass Ave, a couple blocks to the Harvard side of Porter.

Simon's is very cute, and seems really chill. Is the food/coffee good? I always pass it on my walk to/from Harvard.

I-Café in Teele Square. It's completely subterranean, and almost invisible from the street -- look for the glass doors near Aswan Dental (sp?) and Amelia's Kitchen. It's a lovely place with Middle Eastern decor, wireless access, and tasty food.

And open apparently arbitrary hours....

Closed?

I am almost certain that I-Cafe is closed - if not entirely, then for all intents and purposes. I never see it open and the sign is never on. Too bad - my son loved it, and it reminded me of the way Cafe Algiers in Harvard Square used to feel... But it was in a tough spot (downstairs) with no visibility. On the other hand, that was part of its charm.

Grand Prix Cafe on Mass. Ave. between Day and Dover streets, if the TV sound is off.

Also, I've tagged your post "coffee houses", so click on the tag and take a look through earlier posts on this subject.

Also, you may not want a Starbucks, but the one in Davis is noticeably quieter than Diesel. It also has a fireplace once the weather gets cold.

I'm guessing it actually has a fireplace all year round. (...come on, someone had to)

I recently opened a cafe- good food cafe- at 2378 mass ave in cambridge. If you walk the bike path from davis towards mass ave -it's right there. It is on the same block as Joe sent me. There are a couple of nice couches, free internet (!), espresso, coffee, sandwiches and smoothies. Usually there is some jazz playing- not too loud. Stop by- we are open from 8 am to 9 pm- everyday except Monday. Here's the website- www.jimsgoodfood.com Say hi if you come in...Jim
