Hair cuts for men?

I usually cut my own hair in my bathroom with an electric trimmer, and I'm ok with that.

But... I'm getting married shortly, and I need a place to get a nice haircut.
I've gotten recommendations for places in back bay and south boston, but that's a haul. Anyone have suggestions for a swank mens haircuttery in the general Camberville area?

Thanks for any advice!

Edit:
Ended up at Salon Cu with Umberto.
The guys are Boston-area natives, super-friendly, and gave me not only a great haircut but really good advice on how to deal with it best for wedding photos and what-not.
I'll definitely be back there someday, and highly recommend them. Friendliest customer-service I've had since moving to Boston.

Hair is one of the most popular topics here. I've tagged your post appropriately and suggest that you click on the tag to look at previous discussions. (Though most of them are probably about women's hair rather than men's.) -- Your friendly moderator

Once you decide on a place and get your haircut, please return here and leave a comment telling us where you went and whether you were satisfied. This will help future folks who read this post. Thanks!

I think it's really annoying that there's no simple "search" field on livejournal.. sure tagging is great, but someone who stumbles onto a website is usually looking for that one little hole in the screen to search. I know that I found a search field somehow, but it took way more doing than it should have..

I agree, though I'm not sure whether any of us moderators can fix it. The search field is the magnifying glass button on the community's profile page, and it doesn't work especially well.

If [livejournal.com profile] pheromone shows up here, maybe she can find some way to make the link show up in a more obvious place. She's the mod who understands LJ graphic design.

My boyfriend gets his done at Salonika and he's never once come home from there and had me say "What the hell did they do to your head!?" In other words...they do a good job.

I like Mario's on Holland quite a lot. They do men's and women's.

I don't know the name, but I've been going to the little place on the corner of Holland and Winter, right across Holland from the building with the Au Bon Pain, ever since I moved here from Lowell last year. It's cheap ($10, the way a haircut should be) and I've always been satisfied.

Anne-Marie's. I go there and they do a good job. Nonfancy, but good.

I think that Ann-Marie's qualifies as anti-swank. You'll learn a lot about Somerville sitting in there, though, and get a good cut for $10. Tip well.

Agreed. Not where I would go to get a haircut for my wedding, but the other 51 weeks of the year?

Tip well. The sisters are really nice people.

I went to Salon Cu after a suggestion on this community, and I had a great experience. Umberto - formerly of Mario's - does a great job with men's hair. Nice atmosphere, and very reasonable prices (for a salon)...about $20 for a man's haircut.

Oh, and it's in Ball Square.

They do a great job for (relatively) short money. Men's cuts are 20-25, from what I recall.

Since you said "swank mens haircuttery" I figured I'd mention this place I just heard about. It's not in the Camberville area though -- it's on Cambridge St in Allston. They had a table at the Allston Street Fair last weekend so I listened to their shpiel.

Could be a nice pre-wedding splurge for yourself. They even do group sessions for bachelor parties. :)

if you read past posts a lot of people recommend a place called liquid. i, however, recommend against it.

This is going to sound so lame I'm almost embarrassed writing this, but I have gotten three amazing haircuts in a row from three different people at the Supercuts in Central^2. I used to go to Newbury Street years ago and pay $40+ for haircuts. Now I go to Supercuts, and I've loved it every time.

Supercuts is a crapshoot... it really is like getting a beauty school cut. I have a friend that just got a haircut there and it was terrible.

Maksou

This is in the area you specifically asked to avoid, but I've gotten a spectactular pre-wedding haircut from Charles Maksou at Maksou Salon in the financial district. In fact, I'm getting my second haircut there on Saturday.

FYI, that's the place around the corner from my office where i get my eyebrows done. I haven no idea how the haircuts are, but they're super swank, and I can only imagine haircuts cost an arm and a leg, since it's $20 just for my eyebrows. (But the woman who does them is awesome, so I keep going back.)

I mean, I assume you were aiming for something a little bit higher end than the $10 haircuts mentioned above, but I'm not sure where the other end of your budget is.

Maksou is actually not that bad for men's haircuts. I think mine was around $50, including wash & dry & a lesson on how to style it. The lesson was an experience in itself, every morning I imagine Charles saying to his stylist in a thick Lebanese accent, "No! This is not him. This is weird-do. I said funky-do! Make it funky."

FYI, my fiancee's haircut at Maksou was around three times the cost, before tip. Men's hair tends to be a lot shorter and take a lot less time than women's, plus I think some of these salons dsicount men's haircuts to try to get happy customers (loike me) who will expand their market.

I've been going to Salon Mario Russo at Louis Boston for over a year now, and I really like it. I went the first time to cut off the 4' ponytail I had had for fifteen years, and I felt like I wanted this to be an Experience, so it was worth paying for. But I found that it wasn't that outrageous a price, for something I do once every six to eight weeks. And I really like the way Lori cuts my hair.

In terms of local places, I've had good experiences at Judy Jetson on Mass Ave. near Porter.

I would highly recomend Elite on mass ave (where the bike path crosses mass ave). It's on the same block as Joe sent me. It's a husband and wife barbershop- not so much swank-but old school service and really good men's hair cut. For 15 bucks they even whip out the straight razor for the sideburns and back of the neck. If your looking for decor and shiekness- then no. But If you want a really nice cut from some cool local people- go there!

She does a much better job than he does, and quicker, too, but I can't think of a way to request her without causing marital dissension.

I actually like them both, and I think he's a bit faster- but that's probably because I end up in longer conversations with her. But I'm pretty sure that neither one cares at all if you say you'd rather wait for the other-people seem to do it all the time.
