I posted it here because in the past people have wanted to know what the loud jet noises were overhead. I'm not sure where the planes come from, but they seem to fly over Somerville and Medford on the way to Fenway.
The first time they did this after I moved to the area, I had no idea what was going on. My neighbors all got a good chuckle when they came outside and saw me crouched down on the sidewalk shaking with fear.
I believe they generally come from Hanscom which means that you are correct,..they fly over us in Somerville. I actually like the flyovers and seeing if I can catch a glimpse...so, thanks!
I think what you mean to say is: Yay war! Hooray for the military industrial complex! Look at where your tax dollars are going! The wars are going to cost $1.2 Trillion but don't worry about that, just sit comfortably in your little stadium and watch some expensive killing machines fly over!
But you forgot: do we really need to further reinforce the association between war and sports? I think we get enough of that watching Congressional testimony on CSPAN...
This world series is going to be a war, man. Each night a new battle, with the Red Sox and Rockies engaging in hand to hand combat on the Fenway battlefield. So strap on your com-batting helmet and toss that little white hand-stitched grenade. As Donald Rumsfeld might say, you go to the World Series with the team you have, not the team you would like to have.
If this sort of thing represented the most egregious military/government overspending, I think we'd all be in a much happier place.
(My anecdote: the first time this happened when I was around, my roomies and nearly freaked out. At first we thought the fridge was about to explode or something.)
I saw them flying real low over the Tufts campus at 8:15 and circling back north and was wondering what was up. I decided that davis_square would have the answers I sought, and lo and behold.
No, you're missing the point. It's not the dollar cost of the flyover that is offensive, although that is also a waste. Fighter jets drop bombs, which explode and kill people. Fighter jets are not something to cheer about as they fly over a sporting event. Why not just have Wally the Green Monster ride into Fenway atop a tank?
it was cool to hear all my neighbors cheering and whooping as they flew overhead. It was more of a "Go SOX!" cheer than a "Yay WAR!" cheer. Just sayin ....
And you're missing my point, so to reiterate: if the primary use of fighter jets was doing funky flyovers, I think we'd all be in a much happier place.
Superfast planes are cool. So are superfast trains, but constructing a temporary track through Fenway would be highly inconvenient. The fact that something was developed by the military does not make it inherently bad (Velcro, the Internet, etc), even if the military sucks. Now, if the planes were demonstrating their *bombing* capability, that would be another story.
They come from up here in Vermont, stop at Hanscom to say hi, then bust down to the city before coming home. They're part of the 158th (http://www.vt.ang.af.mil/)
