Does anyone have any ideas for meeting space for 10-15 people in Davis Square? Im looking at the Dilboy for larger meetings but having a hard time finding a smaller venue. Anyone have a possible rentable conference room?  Also looking for an office space....a year lease, a possible shared office or temporary sublet would all work....Thanks!

I think the bank next to Starbucks (the name escapes me right now) offers some sort of community space.

Yes, but I think the organization has to have an account, or maybe just you have to have one.

It has to be a non-profit organization that has the account. A personal account won't cut it, unfortunately, even if you are a member of a non-profit. I was disappointed when I got an account there and then couldn't use the space for my not-for-profit-but-not-officially-a-non-profit-group.

That's sort of odd; I once was an officer of an organization that was not an official federally incorporated nonprofit but was a nonprofit group, and Wainwright helped us learn what we needed to get (a federal EIN and a DBA "doing business as" city certificate) to be eligible to have a nonprofit account with them.

What seems odd to you? Your story sounds quite reasonable for Wainwright, as they like to promote non-profits.

I guess I just think it's weird that they wouldn't extend that same privilege (treating a group as a nonprofit when the group is too small/informal to be an official nonprofit) to the group you were with. It seems like we got better treatment than you did, and that that may mean that rather than W having a policy of treating small nonprofits as "real" nonprofits, we may have just hit on some particularly helpful individuals. Which would be a shame, since for the years since that experience of mine I've always used it to help refer individuals and small/informal nonprofits to Wainwright.

I have had groups meet at Wainwright Community Rooms based on me having a personal bank account there. I was able to sign out the room under my own name, take responsibility for it myself, and they didn't care in the least what sort of status my group had.

Progressive Democrats of Somerville sometimes meet at College Avenue United Methodist Church, and used to sometimes meet at Share Group.

This sounds like the kind of thing that could be done with what the lady is doing with the Sacco's space. Don't think it's open yet tho.

Wait a minute, isn't [livejournal.com profile] synergyseeker (the OP) that lady?

Really? I don't know, to be honest, but I suppose it's possible.

I saw something posted at Diesel a month or two ago, about some way to rent a little chunk of it to use as meeting space. You might ask there.

Check out 38 Cameron (just over the Cambridge line). Funky meeting space for all kinds of purposes.

Aren't they really expensive?

Willoughby and Baltic (that's me) is rented by a few different groups during the week, usually for one to three hours at a time. I don't know if people are aware that I've given some arts/community organizations either free or cheap rent because otherwise they couldn't continue. These have mostly been actors, artists and musicians that had nowhere else to go and no budget.

Anyway, Willoughby and Baltic is only 400 square feet, but can comfortably hold 10-15 people. We have seating for twenty and a multimedia projector and it is private.

We're located between Benjapon's and Subway Sandwich shop. It will be turned into a haunted parlor by the Dorkbots from October 30th to November 4th, but you're welcome to stop by and check it out anytime (I'm there from 2-7 weekdays, 12-4 weekends). We might want to be in touch anyway because some of the groups I'm working with might eventually need to transition to a space more like the one you're building. (glad you're here).

The building with Harvard Vanguard in it has some shared office space available in the top floors.

You could talk to First Church Somerville, firstchurchsomerville.org will link you to the admin. There are a couple rooms that we rent for meetings. Between the two theatre groups that rehearse there, it can be tricky to find available times, though.

Are you still planning to have a public event at Sacco's in November?

I have done exactly this using the Wainwright community room. They needed someone with an account at Wainwright to sign out the room for a specific date and time and take responsibility for the meeting; since I have an account, I did that myself. It didn't matter what sort of group it was, they just wanted to know its name for their records.
