My recommendation to you if you have some suggestions on how better the community might be managed is to join [livejournal.com profile] davis_meta, get active, ask questions and make suggestions.

I would point out that not every post in the community is going to be of interest to every single person on every given day.

i'll point out that i think you are missing my point. it's not about whether or not i personally am interested in it, and i don't think it should be. it's about whether or not it's specific to Davis Square and how convenient it is that it doesn't matter because a mod is interested in it.

alright then. here's how to manage the community - delete off topic posts. or change the community rules to broaden the definition of what's on-topic.

"it's inevitable so let's just put it in one place!" still doesn't address the issue of this being something that can be easily covered globally as opposed to locally, and it's not going to save the mods any work in the end because not everyone reads every post. there are bound to be people who post something political because they didn't see the post where they were asked to keep it to one post, and there are bound to be others who post a new post despite having seen the request because "OMGBBQ it's important and WOE, i will die if it gets buried in the long comment thread!??!"

It's been pointed out elsewhere that this is a good way to gauge how the Davis community is voting.

As for the attention whores and whiners, well, if they whine loud enough I'm sure the mods won't mind giving them the gentle caress of the banhammer.

are you suggesting i should be banned for pointing out the mods' inconsistencies in what they allow to stand?

I do not plan to ban anyone unless they are a spammer or repeatedly post stuff that is blatantly offensive to the community. (Criticizing the mods doesn't count as offensive.)

In no way, shape, or form. I'm simply pointing out that in the scenario you described before that any drama queens who think it isn't fair that their "important" post got deleted can be dealt with by the mods.

i'm sorry for mistaking your intent.

i was not suggesting people who might make new posts were drama queens, just that if they feel the message is important (like many do with politics) they might want it separate from long threads. thus, the mods would still have to delete things, not saving them from "running around like chickens".

Of course, I can't read [livejournal.com profile] thetathx1138's mind, but isn't that a response to your second paragraph? The "attention whores and whiners" being your example of people who want their thoughts to be heard in a new post?

Oops, he replied as I was typing! So there you go. Probably no reason for me to have "stepped in" anyway.

Actually, you CAN read my mind! That's exactly what I meant.

it was. i hadn't initially considered such, as my second paragraph was more of an example (to me) how trying to put all the political stuff in one place seemed like an impossible proposition and not a way to save them any work in having to delete things.
