It will be interesting to see if the Davis area results differ drastically from this b0st0n community poll (http://community.livejournal.com/b0st0n/5658966.html) that went up earlier.

To all young people: Please Vote!!

Young people are SO important in this election, but for some reason are not voting! Before last night's New Hampshire primary, the poll numbers were almost identical to those above (for Democrats, at least), but Obama lost to Clinton. If the young people (ie college students) had actually showed up to vote the way they'd declared in the polls, Obama could have won easily! You are an extremely influential demographic, so no matter who you vote for, please vote!!

The students who go to college in New Hampshire might be registered in their home states instead.

Um, the youth vote DID turn out in higher numbers than they did in the last election, according to the breakdowns I've seen. Obama just didn't do as well in NH; honestly considering the nature of New Hampshire it's impressive he came in second and clobbered Edwards by such a margin.

Honestly, this whole "lecturing the youth" thing kind of annoys me. There are plenty of OLD people sitting on their duffs too, y'know.

I think it would be interesting to find out if young people are actually that influential of a demographic in a national election. I'd like to think we are, but I have a sneaking suspicion that AARP card holders are actually more influential.

It seems like there's a popular perception out there in the media that if only young people had someone cooler to vote for, they'd swarm the polls and sweep their candidate into office.  I credit Kurt Loder, P. Diddy, MTV and everyone else who ever suggested we Rock the Vote or Vote or Die. But, elections kind of aren't bearing that out. There are a lot of politicians, especially on the Democratic side, who relied on the youth vote and ended up going home. Kerry was supposed to be bolstered by additional turnout amongst young people in '04, but young people voted in the same % in '04 as in '00.  The percentage of youth who vote has actually significantly declined (http://www.carnegie.org/reporter/02/vote2000/index.html) since 1972.

Maybe Barack Obama is different. It seems like the youth vote did turn out in higher numbers last night.  But, so far, no one has ever conclusively won a presidential election based on the youth vote.  Maybe 2008 will be the year. . . . ? Just in case it's not, I'm going to go home this weekend and try to convince my midwestern middle aged relatives to vote Democratic.

I was annoyed by this poll because none of the "Immigration" choices comes anywhere close to my position (legalize all the existing immigrants, don't build any fences, border security is a non-problem)

Ron, Are you against borders per se? Have you given any thought to what will happen to our economy, standard of living, environment, etc. if people are allowed to continue streaming over the border unchecked? If you 'legalize' those who have already broken the law to come here, you will encourage others to follow suit. Our country is being overwhelmed.....you should check out some of the statistics from the state of California on the cost of illegal immigration.

My grandmother was an illegal immigrant, as she came here on a forged passport. Had she not done so, I wouldn't be here. We should concentrate on how to assimilate and Americanize the stream of immigrants, something the US did a pretty good job of back then.
